Effect of Intercropping of Sesbania Rostrata on the Growth and Yield of Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricutural University, Mymensingh from June to December 1990. The treatments were sole crop of rice, inter-cropping Sesbania with one, two and three row intervals of rice, and Sesbania grown on the borders around the rice plots. Top portions of Sesbania as cutting were planted on 15 days after transplanting of rice ( BR11 ). No significant differences were observed between treatments in 'producing for grain and straw yields of rice. The yield of rice was not affected by Sesbania inter-cropping rather the highest gross return was obtained when Sesbania cuttings were inter-cropped with rice in three row Intervals.

Objectives:

The present study was, therefore, undertaken to see the effect of inter-crop ping of Sesbania rostrata on the growth and yield of aman rice.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Agronomv Field laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh from June to December 1990. The study consisted of the following treatments : T 1-Sole rice (16 rows/plot) T2 2:1 row inter-cropping (16 row rice+8 row Sesbania/ p lot) T 3 3:1 row inter-cropping (16 row rice+5 row Sesbania/ plot ) T4 4:1 row inter-cropping (16 row rice+4 row Sesbania/ plot ) T5 Border planting of Sesbania around the rice plot. The experiment was laid out in a randomized block design with four replications.

Achievement/Findings:

From the economic point of view the highest gross return was obtained from T₄ and this was followed by the treatments T₅ , T₃, ,T₂, and T₁. The gross return was contributed by rice yields by both seed and straw together with seed and stick yield of Sesbania . The yield was more in the treatment T₄ where Sesbania was planted in 3 row intervals of rice. In this treatment (T₄_.) the yield of rice was not affected by Sesbania inter-cropping rather it helped to get more income compared to that of sole crop treatment (T₁) This indicates that Sesbania can be inter-cropped with transplanted aman rice without affecting the rice yield. More over, Sesbania inter-cropping helps to get extra seeds and also biomass fuel to some extent. However, more study with different rice cultivars is needed to arrive at a definite conclusion.
