Correlated Response in Niger Guizotia Abyssinica Cass. (compostitae)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Considerable variability was observed for all the nine characters studied in 25 genotypes of niger (Guizotia abyssinica Cass.) of diverse origin. Days to maturity showed high heritability with high genetic advance in percentage of mean indicating additive gene action. High heritability with low genetic advance in percentage of mean for seed yield per plant, 1000-seed weight, capitula per plant and days to flowering indicated non-additive gene effects. The characters, branches per plant, capitula per plant, 1000-seed weight and harvest index showed significant positive correlations with yield. Path coefficient analysis revealed that capitula per plant, 100-seed weight and branches per plant were positive suggesting that these three traits may be taken into consideration for further improvement of niger in Bangladesh.

Objectives:

To get information on variability, heritability and genetic advance of the yield attributing traits and their association with yield.

Methodology:

A set of 25 niger genotypes with diverse genetic and geographical origin were grown in randomized complete block design with three replications at the Oilseed Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur during rabi 1992 - '93. Plot size and spacing were 3 m x 2 m and 30 cm x 10 cm, respectively. Fertilizer doses of 75, 120 and 50 kg of urea, triple super phosphate (TSP) and murate of potash (MP) per hectare were applied. Irrigation and cultural operations were made as and when necessary to raise a good crop. Observations were recorded on five randomly selected plants in each plot for days to flower (DF), days to maturity (DM), plant height (PH), in em, number of primary branches (PB), number of capitula per plant (CP), number of seeds per capitula (SC), 100-seed weight (SW) in g, harvest index (HI) in per cent and seed yield per plant (YP) in g. Analysis of variance, coefficient of variations, genotypic, phenotypic and environmental coefficient of variation, heritablity in broad sense and genetic advanced in percentage of mean were made according. Direct and indirect effects were worked out using the genotypic correlation coefficients.

Achievement/Findings:

The path coefficient was done to study causal relationships between seed yield and agronomic traits and also to gather information on the existence of negative correlations masking the real contribution of the different components to the end product i.e, seed yield. The result of the genotypic path coefficient analysis is presented. From the results of path analysis it was evident that direct effects contributed by capitula per plant (1.442) and 1000-seed weight (0.707) were high indicating that among the component traits these two characters contributed maximum for the yield. Similar high direct effect by these traits were also reported negative direct effect of 1000-seed weight in niger. The residual effect was 0.208, indicating 79 per cent of the variability in yield per plant was contributed by the eight characters studied. Therefore, maximum emphasis should be given on capitula per plant, 100-seed weight and branches per plant for the improvement of yield in niger.
