Studies on the Carp Seed Collection Nature of Trade and Status in Some Selected Areas of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The existing carp seed ( spawn, fry and fingerlings) trade and its different aspects in some selected places of Bangladesh have been evaluated. Different related aspects of the trade, namely, selection of catching and landing sites, gears and crafts used and. ponds, have been investigated. The trade could be grouped under two major categories, as (a) spawn trade, and (b) fry and fingerlings trade. It was observed that spawn trade was found Common in the river Boral and Jamuna and fry and fingerling trade was in the river Brahmaputra. Collection of spawn started in the river Jamuna in the third week of April and in the river Boral about two months later. The spawn collectors and nursery ponds occupied key positions in the spawn trade. It was observed that the spawn collection was most desirable where there were nursery ponds to grow spawn to a reasonable size, In the absence of nursery ponds, Collection of carp seed at the fingerlings stages was the best practice to do.

Objectives:

To evaluate the existing carp seed ( spawn, fry and fingerlings) trade and its different aspects in some selected places of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Eight areas namely, Begunbarighat, Kewatkhalighat , Kalirbazarghat and Dhalagbat on the river Brabmaputra, Babadurabadghat, Fulchharighat and Sirajgonjghat on the river Jamuna, Charghat on the river Boral were selected for the study. The study was undertaken during April-August, 1974, a total of 121 persons involved in the fish seed . trade were randomly selected and were interviewed. A questionnaire was prepared and supplied to all the selected fishermen. The information collected regarding spawning areas, time and peak period of spawning, catching and landing sites, gears and crafts used and the quantity of fish seed collected. were analyzed and the efforts of different factors on fish seed trade were studied.
