Growth and Yield Performance of Some Advanced Mutant Lines of Lentil Under Rainfed and Irrigated Conditions

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The 3 advanced mutant lines. 4 advanced hybridized lirrs and 1 local variety of lentil were studied in both irrigated and rainfed conditions for their growth and yield performances. The line BLL-84248 produced the highest TDM but the lowest HI under rainfed condition. The BL-81122 was the best line for yield both under rainfed and irrigated conditions. It produced higher TDM and HI. Irrigation did not show any favorable effect on yield in L-5. Chlorophyll content was higher due to irrigation.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were to evaluate lentil lines under irrigated and rainfed conditions and to select better line for higher growth and yield.

Methodology:

The 3 advanced mutant lines of lentil (ML-10. ML-30 and ML-36), 4 advanced hybridized lentil fines (BL-81122, BLL-84228, BLL- 84248 and 113-55) and a variety L-5 were grown under field condition at Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS) farm, Ishurdi in winter season, 1990-91 under both Irrigated and rainfed conditions. The design of the experiment was split plot with 4 replications. Irrigation treatment was in the main plot and the lines were in the subplots. The irrigation was applied first at 20 day after sowing (DAS), second one at 50 DAS and the last one at 65 DAS. The unit plot size was 2 m × 1. 5m. Row to row distance was 50 cm and plant to plant distance was 5 cm. At maturity, 10 plants were randomly selected and their heights from base to the tip were recorded. Data on total dry matter per m² and the yield per m^-2 were then recorded. HI values were calculated using the formula: HI= Grain yield divided by total dry matter. Chlorophyll was estimated according to the method suggested by Arnon (1949). The statistical analyses were done and LSD tests were used to evaluate the mean data.
