Performance of Sugarbeet in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted to see the performance of 24 varieties of sugar beet under Bangladesh conditions. Varieties Autapoli, Solorane,Mono HY-l and Italmono exhibited excellent performance. The rest of the varieties also performed well indicating that the climate of Bangladesh is suitable for the growth and development of sugar beet. The root yield and estimated sugar yield renged from 39088 to 73517 Kg/ha and 6480 to 11233 Kg/ha respectively, with 14.08 to 16.81 percent sugar content.

Objectives:

To explore the possibilities of growing sugar beet in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out in the Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm, Mymensingh during the period from November, 1978 to April, 1979. The experimental land belonged to the old Brahmaputra Floodplain and the soil was composed of 23.8% sand 61.6%, silt and 14.8 % clay with pH 6.5. The soil contained 1.327% organic matter. 0.053% N. 0.085% P and 0.79% K. Seeds ot 24 varieties of sugar beet were obtained from F AO through the Officer-in-charge. Rajbari Demonstra- tion Farm. Dinajpur, Seeds were collected by the FAO Plant Production and Seed Exchange Service in 1977 from Italy and Sweden. The characteristics of these varieties are given below in a tabular form . The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with throe replications. The size of unit plot was 3m x 1.5m. The land was prepared well for obtaining fine tilth and was fertilized with 120 Kg N. 80 Kg PaO. and 80 Kg KaO/ha supplied from urea triple super phosphate and muriate of potash respectively along with 500 Kg/ha of mustard oil cake. Half of Nand whole quantity of other fertilizers were applied during land preparation. The rest half of N was applied after thinning the seedlings. Seeds were soaked in water for six hours and planted on 1 Novem....ber, 1978 giving 75 cm ~ 50 em spacing. The crop was irrigated thrice one after top dressing, another two at 60 and 90 days after sowing. Borax was applied at the rate of 6.5 Kg/ha when crown roots appeared in order to take preventive measures against neck rot disease.
