Growth and Yield of Fine Grain Rice Under Moisture Stresses During Post Flowering

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot and a field experiment were carried out with three varieties of rice to test their tolerance on post flowering stress during aman season at the pot yard of the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh and the field experiment was conducted at Barind Tract, Godagari, Rajshahi respectively. The varieties were Binasail, Ukunimadhi and BRRI dhan32. The treatments were: 100% saturation and 40% saturation at pot condition, and irrigated and rainfed in field condition at Barind Tract. All the morpho-physiological and yield and yield contributing parameters were affected with the stress. Out of three varieties, Ukunimadhu showed identical performance under stress (40% saturation) with that due to irrigated condition. Their yield performance and harvest index were identical and much stable under stress condition. Their root weight, root volume and leaf water was higher than those of others. These results indicate that Ukunimadhu may be suitable for further genetic improvement for drought affected areas of Bangladesh. The mechanism of tolerance from the morphological point of view has been discussed.

Objectives:

To evaluate rice varieties for water stress tolerance with respect to morpho-physiological, yield attributes and yield.

Methodology:

A pot and a field experiment were carried out with three varieties of rice to test their tolerance on post flowering stress during aman season at the pot yard of the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh and the field experiment was conducted at Barind Tract, Godagari, Rajshahi respectively. The varieties were Binasail, Ukunimadhi and BRRI dhan32. The treatments were: 100% saturation and 40% saturation at pot condition, and irrigated and rainfed in field condition at Barind Tract. The soil for this pot experiment collected from the field of BINA campus. Each pot contained 8 kg of soils. Urea, TSP, MP and Zinc sulfate were applied at the rate of 90 kg N, 80 kg P₂O₅, 40 kg K₂O and 4 kg Zn per hectare. The pot experiment was laid out in CRD and field experiment in split plot design with four replications and water treatments in the main plots and varieties in the sub-plots. Thirty days old seedlings were transplanted in the experimental pots and filed on August 8, 2003 at Mymensingh and August 2, at Rajshahi. Water stress of 40% FC was imposed in pot experiment at 30 days after transplanting. The soil moisture at the time of harvest in the field condition at Barind Tract, Rajshahi was irrigated 18 and rainfed 15%. Analysis of variance was done according to the design with the help of computer package MSTAT-C (Russell, 1986). The mean difference among the treatment was tested with Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).
