Yield and Nitrogen Nutrition of Modern Rice as Affected by Nitrogen Fertilization Under Irrigated Culture

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted during 1990 dry season (Boro season) to study the effect of four rates of N fertilization on the yield performance and nitrogen nutrition of three modern rice varieties and a promising line, varying in tillering habit, plant height and growth duration under irrigated culture. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with variety/line as the main plot and nitrogen rate as the sub-plot, replicated thrice. Grain yield of BR1 and BR14 increased significantly up to 120 kg N/ha. But in case of BR3, yield increase was significant up to 8O kg N/ha and for BR802-118-3-1, N application at 120 kg/ha only significantly increased the. grain yield over the control. Agronomic efficiency of added N was higher in short statured BR1 and BR3 than the tall statured BR14 and BR802-118-3-1. Crain yield No was the highest in BR802-ll8- 3-1 followed by BR14, and lowest in BR1. Nitrogen recovery was also higher in short statured varieties than the tall ones irrespective of their growth duration. The promising line BR802-118-3-1 and the variety BR14 may be economically advantageous over the short statures ones.

Objectives:

To determine the effect of N fertilization on the yield performance and N nutrition of three modern rice varieties and a breeding line with different growth durations, tillering habit and plant height.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in Grey-Terrace soil (Chhiata series) of BRRI farm, Joydebpur during 1990 dry season (Boro season). The soil of the experimental field was silty clay having pH 7.0, organic matter 2.1%, total N 0.14%, available P (Olsen) 10 ppm, exchangeable K O.I8 me/100g soil, available S 12 ppm and available Zn 3 ppm. Chemical analysis of the soil was done following standard procedures. Three modern rice varieties (BR1, BR14 & BR3) and a promising line (BR802-118- 3-1) were used in the experiment. Agronomic traits like plant height, growth duration and tillering behaviuour of the varieties/line,were recorded. Four rates of nitrogen (0, 40, 8O & 120 kg N/ha) were used. The experiment was laid-out in a split-plot design with varieties/line as the main plot and nitrogen rate as the sub-plot replicated thrice. Area of each sub-plot was 6 m², Blanket doses of P, K and S (25, 35 & 20 kg/ha, respectively) from TSP, MP and Gypsum were applied before transplanting. Forty-five-day-old seedlings of all the varieties/line were transplanted with a spacing of 20 cm x 20 cm. Nitrogen from urea was applied in three equal splits (1/3 immediately after seedling establishment + 1/ 3 at active tillering stage + 1/3 at 5-7 days before panicle initiation). Necessary intercultural operations were done as and when required. Plant height was recorded at maturity. Each sub-plot, excluding two boarder rows, was harvested for grain and straw yields. Grain yield was adjusted at 14% moisture content. Straw yield was recorded as oven dry basis. Tiller and Panicle number/m² were recorded. Grain and straw samples were analysed for total nitrogen concentration followed by estimation of N. Data were analysed as per standard statistical procedures.
