Field experiments were conducted to develop alternative transplanted Aus-Aman rice cropping patterns for maximizing yield in rainfed favourable environment. Transplanting of Aus in late May to mid-June with several Aus-Aman advance line cropping pattern combinations produced 1.5 t/ha more yield than the existing recommended patterns of BRI-Nizersail. For Aus, the line IR50, IR8608-298-3- 1-1-2 and IR 9729-67-3 and for Aman IR50, BR593-698-5-1-8 and BR593-676-4- 1-2 in general showed superior performance in achieving high total cropping pattern yield. Twenty to 25 days reduction in Aus-Aman total field duration can be obtained by using short duration Aus lines such as IR9729-67-3, IR50 or IR8608-298-3-1-1-2 and photoperiod insensitive Aman lines, such as IR50.

To identify the combination of best performing transplanted Aus and transplanted Aman rice advanced lines or varieties that would maximize rice yield in rainfed favourable environment.

The experiment was conducted in the BRRI farm Joydcbpur. The cropping seasons were Aus and T. Aman during 1985-1986. In 1985, the experimental field was slightly elevated above surrounding fields while in 1986 the field was at the same level with the surroundings. In the first year, the experiment was laid out in split split plot design with two replications. The Sub-subplot size was 3.6m x 5m, the subplot size was 18m x 5.0m and the main plot size was 18m x 30m. There were 3 dates of transplanting viz.,21 May,3 Jun and 16 June of Aus as mainplot treatment, 6 Aus varieties/Iines viz., BR1(check), IR50, IR8608-298-3-1-12,IR9729-67-3,IR2061-465-1-5-5 and IR13429-109-2-2-1 as subplot treatment and 5 T. Aman varieties/lines viz., BR11 (check),IR50,BR593-698-5-1-8,BR593-676-4-1-2 and Nizersail(check) as sub-subplot treatments. For pattern combination, each Aus line/variety was followed by all T. Aman lines/ varieties which gave a total of 30 variety combinations. BR593-676-4-1-2 and BR 593- 698-5-1-8 represented promising advanced photoperiod-sensitive materials. IR50 and IR9729- 67-3 were short duration photoperiod-insensitive materials. In Aus IR50, IR8608-3-1- 1-2 and IR9729-67-3 were promising short duration Aus lines. In the second year, the experimental design' was factorial randomized complete block with three replications. Based on 1985 experiences, six Aus- T. Aman cropping patterns/varietal combinations were tested with three dates of transplanting of Aus. the dates were 5 May, 25 May and 14 June. There were 54 unit plots, measuring 5m x 3m each. The cropping patterns were as BR1-Nizersail(check), BR1-BR11(check),IR8608-298-3-1-1-2 --BRll ,IR9729-67-3 --BR14 ,BR21 -IR50 and BR20-BR850-9-1-1. In both the years, Aus seedling age was maintained at 20-25 days and that in Aman was according to variety/line. For BRll and Nizersail, 30-days-old seedlings were used and for advanced lines, it was 20-21 days. Plant spacing was 25 crn x 10 cm. Fertilizers were used for Aus and Aman at the rate of 60-40-40 kg/ha for N-P205-K20. Yield data were recorded from 5m2 area and was adjusted to 14% moisture content in t/ha.
