Effect of Planting Methods on Grain Yield of Aus +deepwater Rice Mixed Cropping

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Field experiments were conducted in farmers' fields at Shibalaya, Manikganj during 1984-85. The soil of the experimental field was silt loam to clay loam. The experiments were carried out to determine the effects of planting methods on grain yield of Aus + deepwater rice (DWR) mixed cropping. The number of tillers of DWR were influenced by the methods of planting. Grain yield of Aus was reduced by mixed cropping with DWR. Similarly transplanted DWR produced higher grain yield than mixed cropping excepting simultaneous sowing in 1985. Therefore, the farmers in the DWR environment may be suggested to adopt simultaneous sowing or transplanting of DWR after Aus harvest.

Objectives:

To study the effects of planting methods on the grain yields of Aus + DWR mixed cropping.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in farmer's fields at Shibalaya, Manikganj, in 1984 and 1985. The area is flood-prone and the flooding depth varies from 1.0 to 2.0 m. The soil type is silt loam to clay loam at different depths. The local Aus rice variety "Kalamanik" and the DWR variety "Bawalia" were used in the experiment. The following four planting methods were used: M,₁= Aus and DWR seeds were mixed and sown together; M₂= Aus seeds were broadcast and DWR seeds were sown at 14 days after sowing (DAS) of Aus; M₃ = Aus seeds were broadcast and DWR seeds were broadcast at 21 DAS of Aus; and M₄= Aus seeds were. broadcast and seedlings of DWR were transplanted immediately after Aus harvest. Hundred kg seed/ha at the ratio of 60 and 40 for Aus and DWR, respectively, was used in all methods excepting M₁where the seed rate of Aus was 100kg/ha. The seeds of Aus rice were brodacast on 25th March, 1984 and 10th March, 1985. The design used was randomized complete block with four replications. There were 16 plots, measuring 6m x 9m each. The fertilizer rate used was 60-40-40, N-P₂0₅-K₂0 kg/ha. Half of total N and all P₂0₅ and K₂0 were' applied as basal. The remaining 50% N was topdressed at 30 DAS of Aus, DWR seedlings were raised in farmers homestead area and was randomly trasplanted just after Aus harvest with 3-4 seedlings/hill. Data on tiller counting of DWR at Aus harvest and at the time of DWR harvest were collected from 1m²sample area in each plot. Grain yields of both Aus and DWR were collected from 10m²sample area. The samples were threshed, cleaned, weighed and the yields were adjusted at 14% moisture content.
