Marketing of Paddy by Intermediaries in Two Selected Areas of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was undertaken to 'analyse the economics of Aman paddy marketing in two selected secondary markets of Barisal district during 1990. Study showed that different intermediaries, like pharia, paiker aratdar and retailer, functioned under different channels. The average purchase of aman paddy/ rice for all intermediaries were 1232 quintal for six months. The average per quintal marketing cost for miller was highest (Tk 53.4) and the profit 'was also highest for miller (Tk 20/quinta). On the other hand, the marketing cost for retailer was lowest (Tk ,16.6/quinta) but their profit was higher than the profit of pharia (Tk 13/quinta), paiker (Tk 12/quinta) and aratdar (Tk 14/quintal). Price spread and farmers share of consumers price under three different paddy/rice marketing channels have been worked out. The result indicated an inverse relationship between the marketing channel and the farmers share i. e, shorter marketing channel leads higher amount of share for the rice farmers.

Objectives:

To verify these beliefs and hypotheses by examining the marketing system of paddy /rice with special emphasis on the role of various functionaries involved in the marketing channel.

Methodology:

The study was conducted using market level information obtained through sample survey during aman paddy marketing period (1990) in which the farmers grew and sold 'aman paddy intensively and where there was a potentiality to develop the marketing system. Two secondary markets namely Muladi and Khaserhat under Muladi upazilla of Barisal were selected. These two markets may be considered ,as representative of the rural secondary markets of Barisal. The intermediaries involved in the marketing of aman paddy were categorized into Jour groups, viz, (i) pharia (ii) paikar (iii) aratdar and (iv) retailer. A total of 40 intermediaries taking 10 from each group who operate in the selected market areas, were selected at random for the study. The intermediaries were interviewed personally using pre tested questionnaire on the market days. Ten millers were also surveyed through another questionnaire prepared for the purpose.
