Two separate experiments were designed to ascertain the effects of different shelter and stocking density on the growth and survival rate of fresh water spiny eel. Mastacembalus armatus reared in the cemented cisterns. The size of each cistern was 2.5 m2. Different shelters like PVC pipes, water hyacinth and without shelter (control) and three stocking densities (20, 30 and 40 fishes/ 2.5 m2) were used respectively. All the experimental fishes were fed with dead small shrimps containing 18% protein. The results showed significantly (P<0.05) better growth (68.8g) and survival rate (100%) reared with PVC pipes than the water hyacinth (49.13g) and (80%) respectively. For stocking density the results indicated that the fish M. armatus showed best growth rate (14.1 g) with lowest stocking density (20- fish/2.5m2). While significantly (P<0.05) highest net production (0.174 kg/m2) was observed with highest stocking density (40 fist/2.5m2). Water quality parameters including temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH and alkalinity were recorded throughout the study period and found within the suitable range. On the basis of better growth. survival rate and net fish production. it was observed that the PVC pipe found to be the suitable shelter and lowest density 20 fishes/2.5m2 was a suitable stocking density for the rearing of M. armatus ill the cemented cisterns.

To ascertain the effects of different shelter and stocking density on the growth and survival rate of fresh water spiny eel, Mastacembalus armatus reared in the cemented cisterns.

For the above study the live specimens of M. armatus of the similar body weight (3.5 ± 1.55 g) were collected from the local fishermen. Collected fishes were acclimatized for 15 days in a cemented cistern with PVC pipes. To study the effect of different shelters on growth and survival rate, nine cemented cisterns (size 2.5 m2 each) were selected for a period of one year from September 200I to August 2002. To study the effect of stocking density on growth and survival rate, nine cemented cisterns (size 2.5 m2 each) were selected for a period of three months from April to June 2002. These cisterns were adjacent to the faculty of Fisheries, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. Each cistern was provided with different shelter like PVC pipes, water hyacinth and without shelter (control). In the three cisterns ten PVC pipes of size about 50 cm long with same diameter (3.5 cm) were placed as a shelter and designated as a treatment 1. About half of the bottom of three cistern were provided with water hyacinth as a shelter and designated as treatment II, and three cisterns were used as control (without shelter) in treatment III. The depth of the water was maintained at 40.0 cm for all the cisterns. Each treatment was replicated thrice. All the experimental fish were fed with same diet (small dead shrimp) containing (18% protein). On every alternate day, water of the cisterns was exchanged to prevent accumulation of the growth inhibitory anmonia as reported . Three stocking densities used were 20, 30 and 40 fish/2.5 m2 and designated as treatment I, II and III respectively with PVC pipe as a shelter. Each treatment was replicates thrice. All the experimental fish were fed with same diet (small dead shrimp) containing (18% protein). Every alternate day water of the cisterns was exchanged to prevent accumulation of the growth inhibitory ammonia as reported. Initially feed was supplied to all the cisterns once daily morning at 10.00 AM at the rate of 5% of the body weight. After one week the amount of feed were supplied as required by the fish. Sampling was done at an interval of one month. The fish were weighed on an electronic balance with the help of small plastic bucket to determine their growth rate. Due to the heavy secretion of mucus and dorsal serrated spines on the body of freshwater spiny eel, it was very difficult to handle the live fish, that's why the length measurement was avoided. Water quality parameters like temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, alkalinity to study the effect of different shelters and stocking density on growth and survival rate were recorded monthly throughout the study period. D.O was measured by a portable D.O. meter (YSI model 58), pH was determined with pH meter and total alkalinity was determined by titration. While temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, alkalinity, ammonia and nitrite were recorded monthly for three months to study the effect of stocking density on growth survival rate.

The results of the present study indicated that the freshwater spiny eel, M. armatus can be reared successfully in the cemented cisterns with PVC pipes as a suitable shelter and suitable stocking density of 20 fishl2.5 m2 for better growth, survival and production.
