Supplementation of Straw-based Diets with Urea Molasses Block Containing Antiparasitic Drug to Improve Milk Production of Dairy Cows

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Effects of supplementing urea molasses block (UMB) and medicated UMB on live weight gain, body condition score, milk yield and milk composition of indigenous dairy cows fed straw based diets were studied under rural situation. The experiment was conducted at the villages of Muktagacha Upazila under Mymensingh district using 12 dairy cows. The animals were divided into three groups and randomly assigned to three dietary treatments such as unsupplemented control (without UMB), UMB supplemented and medicated UMB supplemented diets. Feeding of medicated UMB to naturally infected dairy cows with gastrointestinal nematode parasites, cleaned up completely the eggs per gram (EPG) of faeces within 7 days and this trend continued throughout the experiment. The difference in average daily live weight gain was significantly (P<0.01) higher in animals fed medicated UMB and UMB (56.8 and 41.9 g, respectively) compared with that of the control group (-23.68 g) and animals fed medicated UMB was non significantly higher than that of the animal fed UMB. The highest body condition score (3.06) was recorded for the animals of medicated UMB group and the moderate condition score (2.81) was observed for UM B group, When milk yields were compared fortnight basis, yields on second and third fortnights were significantly (P<0.05) higher ill medicated and non medicated UMB groups than control group. The average protein and fat percent of milk of cows offered medicated UMB were 3.98 and 4.75 respectively, which were nonsignificantly higher than those of UMB (3.95 and 4.6) and control (3.88 and 4.43) groups.

Objectives:

To control gastrointestinal nematodes through strategic feed supplementation with medicated UMB and also to improve milk production in dairy cows.

Methodology:

The research was conducted for a period or 45 days with 12 indigenous dairy cows in the villages of Muktagacha upazila or Mymensingh district. Selection or animals were based on milk production, stage or lactation and presence of nematode parasite in the faeces. Cows were grouped into 3 having 4 animals in each group. The animals were distributed in three groups in such a manner that there were negligible variation within tile group in terms of lactation stage. Molasses, rice polish, wheat barn, urea, lime and common salt were used for the preparation of UMB. Medicated UMB was also prepared using same ingredients along with 0.5g fenbendazole per kg block (Fenbenclazole, Peraclear^(R), Techno Drugs, Narsingdi, Bangladesh). The ingredients used in formulating basal diet were rice straw, cut grass (roadside), wheal bran, rice polish and mustard oiI cake. The animals of control group A received unsupplemented basal diet in order to satisfy their requirements for maintenance and milk production. However, each animal of groups Band C was supplemented daily with 250 g urea molasses block (UMB) and medicated UMB, respectively in addition to the basal diet. The animals were kept in individual stalls and plain UMB and medicated UMB were supplied to the animals in a wooden box for proper licking and also to ensure daily intake of 125 mg fenbendazole by each cow of group C. Body conditions (1 to 5 points ranks) of the experimental dairy cows have been estimated on clay 0 and 45 of the experiment according to Scottish Agricultural College Grading Rule (SAC, 1984). Feeds supplied to experimental animals were collected and analysed for dry matter (DM), crude fibre (CF), crude protein (CP) and ash following the methods of AOAC (1980). Milk samples were collected from each animal once before the start of the experiment and again just prior to its termination. The samples were analysed for protein and fat. The faecal samples were collected in the morning before feeding (day 0, 7, 15,30 and 45) and were examined at the Parasitology laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh for quantitative determination of nematode eggs following McMaster method followed. Live weight of each cow of all groups was taken at the beginning of the experiment and thereafter every fortnight interval. Feed intake and milk yield of cows were recorded daily. Body conditions of the experimental animals and parasite egg counts per gram (EPG) of faecal samples of all cows were also recorded.

From the above results of field trial, it is evident that medicated UMB would be suitable for the control of gastrointestinal nematodes, increased live weight, body condition and mil k production of indigenous dairy cows.
