Effect of Post Emergence Raking Followed by Laddering on the Growth and Development of Aus Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Post emergence raking followed by laddering is a common practice in dry seeded rice in Bangladesh. An experiment was conducted in a Chiata series of grey terrace soil during Aus season of 1987 at the BRRI Gazipur. The treatments were no raking, one raking and one laddering after 10 days, two raking and one laddering after 10 days, one raking and one laddering done twice after 10 and 30 days, and two rakings and one laddering done twice on 10 and 30 days of rice seedling emergence. The objective was to known the effect of post emergence raking and laddering on the growth and development of rice plant. Post emergence raking followed by laddering stimulated the rice plant to produce more tillers and dry matter. This was mainly attributed to overcome the injury caused to the plants during raking and laddering as compared to that produced by unraked plants. Two rakings done twice-one at 10 and the other at 30 days after seedling emergence was more effective than single raking once or twice.

Objectives:

To ascertain the effects of post emergence raking followed by laddering on rice plant growth and development.

Methodology:

The experimental land belongs to Chiata series of grey terrace soil suitable for direct seeded Aus rice. The treatments were : T₀= No raking and laddering; T₁ = One raking and one laddering on 10 days after seedling emergence (DAE); T₂ = Two rakings and one laddering on 10 DAE; T₃ = One raking and one laddering done twice on 10 and 30 DAE and T₄ = Two rakings and one laddering done twice on 10 and 30 DAE; and The experimental design was randomized complete block with three replications. The rice variety used was BR20, a BRRI developed modern rice variety recommended for direct seeding during the Aus season. Urea, TSP and MP at the rate of 133, 88.9 and 66.7 kg per /ha were used in the experiment. Rice seeds at the rate of 80 kg/ha were hand broadcast on 30 April, 1987 after final land preparation. Raking and laddering operations were done as scheduled in the treatments. Hand weeding was done in all the plots on 25, 45 and 60 DAE. Data on different parameters were recorded through sampling on prescheduled dates from each plot. Leaf area index (LAI): Ten plants were collected at random from each plot on 8, 18, 38, 48 and 58 DAEs. Total leaf area of the sampled plants was determined with automatic area meter and the leaf area index (LAI) was calculated. Relative growth rate (RGR): These sampled 10 plants were oven dried at 70 ⁰C for 48 hours and their dry weights were found out and 'the relative growth rate. (RGR) was calculated for each treatment , Tiller production per square meter : The number of tillers per 50 x 50 sq.cm area was counted on 8, 18, 28, 38, 48 and 58 DAEs from three spots selected at random from each plot and expressed per sq.m.
