Effect of Population Density and Seedling Age on the Yield of Late Planted Rainfed Lowland Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The field experiments were conducted at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) farm, Gazipur during the T. Aman season to investigate the effect of population density and seedling age on the yield of late Aman rice. Fifty- day-old seedling produced higher number of tillers and panicles compared to that of 30 -day-old seedling in 1986. While 1987, with the increased of seedling ages the number of tillers increased in BRll and decreased in Nizersail. Nizersail planted with younger seedling produced more number of tilers than older seedlings though it could not reflected on grain yield. Fifty day old seedling of BR11 and BR22 and 70-day old seedling of Nizersail produced significantly higher yield than 30- day -old seedling. The number of tillers, panicles and grain yield increased with the increase of plant population density in both experiments.

Objectives:

To investigate the effect of population density and seedling age on the yield of late Aman rice.

Methodology:

The field experiments were conducted at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) farm, Gazipur during the T. Aman season. Thirty- and 50 -day-old seedlings of photosensitive promising line BR545-5-1-2-1 were transplanted with 2-3 and 5-6 seedlings per hill in 1986. Similarly, 30-, 50-, and 70-day old seedlings of BR11, BR22 (Promising line BR539- 17-4-3-3-1, released as a variety in 1988) and Nizcrsail were planted using 2-3 seedling per hill in 1987. BRll was weakly and BR22 and Nizersail were strongly photoperiod sensitive. In both the studies seedlings were planted on 18 September at 25cm x 20cm and 25x l0cm spacing. The treatments were distributed in split-plot design, placing variety in the main plot and seedling age and population density in the sub-plot. All the treatments were replicated thrice and the unit plot size was 2.5mx2.0m. Fertilizers N, P₂0₅'K₂0 and S were applied at the rate of 60-40-40-10 kg/ha. Weeding and other managements were done as and when necessary. Tiller per square meter was recorded at different growth stages and panicles at harvest. For grain yield, the whole plate was harvested and grain yield was expressed in t/ha at 14% moisture content.
