Abundance and Depth Distribution of Oligochaetes in Three Derelict Ponds

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Oligochaetes were collected from three derelict ponds ( each of 0.2 Acre) of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, for a eight months period. Selected physicochemical factors (water level, temperature, pH, and dissolved Oxygen) having influence on the: abundance and distribution of oligochaetes were determined. Oligochaetes showed their abundance in months from February to April and the lowers' number was found in September. Collected oligochaetes species were Branchiura .rowerby;; Mesenchytraeus sp.; Botherioneurum sp ; Aulodrilus sp. Dero dorsalis; Dero digitata and Limnodrilus hoffmeisterl. The most dominated species were; Branchiura sowerbyl, and Mesenchy traeus sp, Oligachaete biomass was found to increase with increasing depth. This was found to be very high at the bottom because of availability of more food in the lower depths

Objectives:

To get information about the qualitative and quantitative aspects of organisms which help to improve the ecology of natural water bodies.

Methodology:

Sampling sites: The experiment was carried out in the ponds situated at the Bangladesh Agricultural University Campus. Mymensingh close to the weather yard station. Out of nine, three ponds were selected for the present study. The ponds were excavated in 1977. The size, shape, slope and depth of the ponds were more or less same. The marginal slopes were roughly uniform and the bottoms were flat. All were rectangular in size and were not interconnected by inlet or outlet and bad no opening for drainage. There were no big rooted trees on the embankmentor near the study area. The ponds were completely derelict before the study period. During the first week of January 1979, the vegetation were removed manually and the ponds were supplied with water from a nearby big pond. The vegetation recorded during the pre-study period were Pristia sp, Echornia sp ; Marsilca sp ; Nymphaea ; Jussiacea repens ; Enhydra fluctuans ; Leeria hexandra and Polygonum sp.
