Correlation and Path Analysis in Sugarcane

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study on the character association and relative contribution of different characters on cane yield In sugarcane was conducted using 22 promising clones and one standard variety. In general, the genotypic correlations were higher than their corresponding phenotypic values. Cane yield per plot was positively and significantly correlated with number of tillers per plot, number of millable canes per plot, height of cane, cane girth and single cane weight. Path coefficient analysis showed that the direct effect of the number of millable cane per plot was highest followed by single cane weight on cane yield of sugarcane.

Objectives:

To estimate the correlations between cane yield and yield components as well as to estimate the direct and indirect effects of different yield components on cane yield in sugarcane varieties

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at he sugarcane research farm of Bangladesh Sugarcane Research Institute lshwardi during 1990-91. The planting date was 5th December 1990. The experiment was conducted in randomized block design with four replications . The plot size was 5m x 6m. Data on number of tillers/ plot. number of millable canes/plot, number of internode/ cane, height of cane (m), cane girth (cm), single stalk weight (kg), cane yield/plot (kg), brix (%), sucrose (%) were collected. For first two characters the middle three row/ lines were considered and for rest of the characters average of ten individual plants were considered.. Correlation coefficient between different characters were estimated following standard formula.

Achievement/Findings:

The number of tillers/plot, height of cane, cane girth and sucrose percentage had indirect effects on cane yield I plot but their genotypic correlations were positive. Though the number of tillers/ plot had negative direct effect on cane yield / plot but the genotypic correlation was positive and this might be mainly due to indirect positive influence through number of millable canes/ plot end number of internodes/cane. Majority of the characters exhibited negative indirect effect on cane yield/ plot via number of millable canes/plot, brix percentage and sucrose percentage. The results of the path coefficient studies showed that number of millable canes/ plot and single cane weight were the most important contributors to cane yield/plot . Emphasis may be given on these two characters for the improvement of cane yield in sugarcane through any selection programme.
