Small-scale Broiler and Layer Poultry Farm in Mymensingh: an Economic Interpretation

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study examined the relative profitability of small-scale broiler and layer poultry farms located in Sadar Upazila in Mymensingh district. In total 60 farms, in which 30 were broiler and 30 were layer poultry farms were selected purposively. A simple cost and return analysis together with Cobb-Douglas production function model were employed to achieve the main objectives of the study. The study revealed that the yearly net return per broiler poultry farm was Tk 56,290.0 and Tk 90,608.0 for layer poultry farm. Layer poultry farm was found more profitable than the broiler poultry farm. It is evident from the study that the selected variables have exhibited some significant impacts on production processes of broiler as well as layer poultry farms. The study has also detected some major problems of owners of the small-scale poultry farms like: capital constraint, high prices of inputs, frequent occurrences of diseases, inadequate veterinary services, non-availability of sufficient number of chicks and unstable output prices. If these problems could immediately be solved, income of both the categories of farmers would have been increased substantially.

Objectives:

1. To assess the relative profitability of broiler and layer poultry farms.

II. To estimate the contribution of the key variables to the production processes of broiler as well as labour poultry farms.

iii. To identify some crucial problems facing the farmers in conducting poultry business.

iv. To suggest some policy guidelines/recommendations.

Methodology:

In consideration of the above-mentioned objectives of the study, 8 unions of Sadar Upazila of Mymensingh district were purposively selected for the study. These unions are: (i) Khagdahar, (ii) Dapunia, (iii) Akua, (iv) Paurashava, (vi) Paranganj, (vii) Ghagra, and (viii) Sirta, were the concentration of small-scale poultry raisers was higher comparared to that of adjoining Upazilas. A purposive sampling technique was followed in this study. Necessary information were collected from 30 layer and 30 broiler poultry farms from the selected areas. The period of investigation covered a complete year of 1998/99 (i.e., 1 July 1998 to 30 June 1999). Keeping in view the ultimate goal of the study, a draft questionnaire was initially prepared. Before finalization of the questionnaire, it was pre-tested by interviewing a few farmers of the study area.A simple tabular analysis, and cost and return per farm analyses were done using the following algebraic 1[ (profit) equation:
