Effect of Different Levels of Production Technology on the Growth and Yield of Soybean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two soybean varieties- (i) Bragg and (ii) Davis were grown under four levels of production technology namely, (i) poor level, (ii) low level, (iii) medium level and (iv) high level. Experimental findings revealed that Davis was statistically superior to Bragg in respect of seed yield/ plot and hay weight/ plot. The variety did not show any statistically significant difference in nodule/ plant, plant population/ plot, plant height, pod/ plant, seed/ pod, and 100 seed weight. Levels of technology had significant effect on the number of nodule/ plant, plant population, plant height, number of pod/ plant. number of seed/ pod, 100 seed weight, seed yield/ plot and hay weight/ plot. It appeared that Bragg and Davis gave the highest seed yield/ plot and hay weight/ plot when given medium level of technology. But the varieties could not respond linearly in respect of seed yield / plot and hay weight/ plot under the high level of technology due to fungicidal seed treatment.

Objectives:

To find out the optimum production technology on the growth and yield of soybean.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the Agronomy Field Laboratory of the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during the period from 10^th January to 15^th May. 1979. The soil of the experimental land was sandy in texture with pH 6.6 having 0.077%, 0.015% and 0.208 % of total N, P, and K at a depth of 0- 15 cm. The crop was grown under four different levels of production technology in package forms. The levels of technology used are as follows as poor level of technology, poor level of technology, medium level of technology and high level of technology. Broadcasting of seeds (100 kg/ha ). Broadcasting of seeds (100 kg / ha) + use of cowdung (5 to ns/ha ) + one hand weeding (15 days after sowing ). Line sowing (plant to plant distance 5 cm and row to row distance 30 cm) + fertitizer application ( 20 kg 8, 60 kg P₂O₅ and 40 kg K₂O/ ha, respectively, as Urea, Triple Superphosphate and Muriate of Potash) + use of inoculum (Nitragin @17g/kg of seeds) + two hand weeding (15 and 30 days after sowing) + one irrigation (25 days after sowing) + use of Diazinon (one time) during the growing season + control of insects by hand picking. Line sowing (plant to plant distance 5 cm and row to row distance 30 cm ) + fertilizer application (30 kg N, 90 kg P₂O₅ and 60 kg K₂O/ ha, respectively as Urea, Triple Superphosphate and Muriate of potash) + use of inoculum (Nitragin @17 g/kg of seeds + seed treatment with fungicide (Granosan- M) + two hand weeding (15 and 30 days after sowing) + two irrigation (25 and 50 days after sowing) + use of Diazinon (two times) during the growing season and the later part of growth + Control of insects by hand picking. The experiment was laid out in split- plot design with three replications giving variety in the main plot and level of technology in the sub- plot. The size of unit plot was 4 m × 4 m. The land was prepared well with power- tiller and country plough. The data on different characters were statistically analyzed. The means were compared for significant difference by using Duncan's New Multiple Range Test.

Achievement/Findings:

Experimental findings revealed that medium level of technology proved to be superior to the rest of treatment levels included in the study in producing high seed yield/ plot due to its favourable combination effect on growth and development of soybean plant. Though, it was expected to get higher seed yield from the high level of technology but it did not give the highest seed yield due to mainly seed treatment with fungicide at the time of sowing as well as higher rates of fertilizer used.
