Micronutrient Status of Rubber-growing Soils of Madhupur

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Evaluation of micronutrient status of some growing soils, namely Angaria, Mominpur, Pirgacha, Goliabaid, Aronkhola, Kaikachuna, Sonakuri, Dharati, Eluchuna and Kamarchala of Madhupur amounted a mean 3.2, 74.5, 0.1 and 0.3 μ/g^-1 of available Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn, respectively. The availability of the micronutrients were influenced by the amount of clay, pH and organic matter content of the soils. Among the micronutrients, only Mn was found to be optimum for rubber growth.

Objectives:

To evaluate the micronutrient (Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn) status of rubber growing soils of Madhupur.

Methodology:

Samples of soils (0 - 15 cm) were collected from ten locations of rubber growing areas of Madhupur. Each sample was a composite sample of five sub-samples. The locations were Angaria, Mominpur, Pirgacha, Coliabaid, Aronkhola, Kaikachuna, Sonakuri, Dharati, Eluchuna and Kamarchala. The collected samples were air-dried, ground, sieved (<2 mm) and stored in polyethylee bags. Some physico-chemical properties of these soils are presented. Fifteen gram soil (< 2 mm) was taken into a clean glass bottle fitted with a polyethylene cap and the soil was shaken on an end-over-end shaker for 1 h with 75 ml of 0.05 M EDTA solution (pH 7.0). The extract was filtered through and EDTA - washed Whatman No. 540 filter paper without washing. Contents of Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn in the filtrate were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometer.

Achievement/Findings:

The highest and lowest amount of Fe were observed in Aronkhola (9.1 µg g^-1) and Angaria (1.1 µg g^-1) soils, respectively. A significant positive relation- ship of available Fe with clay content and a negative one with organic matter and pH were observed. In general, the soils were found to be deficient in available Fe. The reason might be due to the fact that Fe is generally associated with clay content of soil. Increase in pH generally reduces the availability of Fe because of formation of in- soluble hydroxides. Moreover, Fe gets complexed with humified fraction of organic matter rendering its availability in soil. The available Mn in the soils varied from 35 (Sonakuri) to 114 µg g^-1 (Angaria) with a mean of 74.5 µg g^-1. A negative relationship of available Mn with clay and positive variation with organic matter and pH were observed though not significantly. The soils could be rated as optimum in available Mn.
