Growth and survival of prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) were evaluated in relation to incorporation of GIFT tilapia, rohu and catla under polyculture system. There were two treatments and three replication of each. Silver carp (Hypopthalmictuh ys molitrixi, catla (Catlt catla) and prawn (M. rosenbergii] were stocked at a stocking density of 10, 3 and 5O/decimal respectively in both treatments. Rohu (Labeo rohita) was stocked at a stocking density of 8/decimal in treatments T1 and GIFT was stocked at a rate of 20/decimal in treatments T2. The average growth and survival rate of silver carp and catla were higher with rohu (T,) than with GIFf tilapia (T2). However, differences were not statistically significant (P<0.05). The specific growth rate (SGR) of prawn was higher in T1 (1.98%) than in T2 (1.90%). The significantly higher (P<0.05) survival (70.85%) was found in T1 where rohu stocked with prawn and the lower survival rate (63.5%) was obtained in T2 where GIFT tilapia was stocked with prawn The yield of prawn in T1 (649.25 kg/ha) was significantly higher (P<0.05) than T2 (511.27 kg/ha), GIFT tilapia had an antagonistic effect on growth, survival and production of prawn. Total fish production was significantly higher (P<0.05) in T2 (2781.9) than in T1(2021.14), because the production of GIFT was very high (1769.06 kg/ha.) than rohu (954.97 kg/ha.).

To observe the effect of GIFT on growth and survival of prawn and determine the feasibility of culturing GIFT in prawn polyculture system.

The study was carried out from April to September 2002 in two earthen ponds of Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute, Freshwater Station pond complex having water surface area 21 decimal of each pond. The pond was completely drained out and remained exposed to the sun for 7 days until the bottom cracks. The ponds were divided into three plots of 7 decimal size each. These plots were made by bamboo fetching and nylon mosquito nets. They were of 5 feet height from ground level so that the prawns, stocked in one plot cannot move towards the other plot. Bamboo poles were used to fix the net vertically. Lime was applied to the soil at the rate of I kg/ decimal. After liming the ponds were filled with water. Organic and inorganic fertilizers were applied in the panel. Organic fertilizer such as, cowdung was broadcast over the pond at a rate of 10 kg/ decimal. After 3-4 days of organic fertilization, urea and TSP were applied at the rate of urea 100 gm and TSP 75 grm/ decimal. There were two treatments with three replications of each. The species combination and stocking density of fish and prawn in treatment I were silver carp-10 catla-3, rohu-8, prawn-50 and in treatment Il were silver carp-I0. catla-3, GIFT-20, prawn-50. Prawn were produced in Freshwater Station Prawn Hatchery of Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute and the PL were nursed up to juvenile stage in pond condition and prawn juvenile and fish fingerlings were stocked as treatment wise in prepared ponds. Fish and prawn were fed twice daily at the rate of 5-3% body weight with BFRI formulated feed. The composition of feed were fishmeal 10%, mustard oilcake 25%, rice bran 40% and wheat bran 25%. Growth performance, health condition and biomass of fish and prawn were checked fortnightly by sampling and amount of feed was adjusted at this time. The nutrient management included monthly fertilization and daily feeding. At the end of the experiment. each pond was drained and all the fish and prawn were caught.
