Socio-demographic Background and Motivational Aspects of the Women's Participation in Income Generating Activities

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study analyzes some socio-demographic background and motivational aspects of the women characteristics such as age, marital status, family size, family type, level of education, exposure to mass media and contact with extension agent which influence them in participating agricultural income generating activities of BRAC (Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee). The study was conducted at Mashimpur union of Shibpur thana in Narshingdi district. Findings of the study revealed that the average age of the respondents was 36.63 years with nearly 74% of them being married. The average family size was 4.97 and about 79% of them had no schooling. Ninety two percent of the respondents had exposure to radio, while 62% enjoyed television programme and a little over 35% had gone through printed materials. An overwhelming majority of them (96.26%) had contact with BRAC's extension agents but their contact with other groups of extension agents was very poor.

Objectives:

(i) To describe the socio-demographic background,

(ii) To analyze some of the motivational aspects that facilitated or influenced rural women to participate in agricultural income generating activities of BRAC.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at Mashimpur union of Shibpur thana in Narsingdi district. Data were collected by two trained enumerators under the close supervision of the researcher from members of the female village organizations under BRAC's Rural Development Programme who have taken loan for agricultural income generating activities like vegetable production, poultry raising, livestock rearing and fish culture. The list of entire population of 107 respondents was obtained from the local BRAC office and they were interviewed by survey method. Data were collected using interview schedule through face to face interview. Data collection took one month from 1 - 30 June, 1994. Age of the respondent was measured in terms of period of time in years from her last birth day to the time of interview. Marital status was measured on whether the respondents were unmarried, married, widow, divorced or separated. Likewise, family size was measured on the basis of total number of members of a household, such as husband, wife, children and other members, who were living together in the family. The family size was categorized into small (2 - 4), medium (5 - 7) and large (> 7). Family type was categorized as nuclear and extended. Level of education was measured in terms of highest level of educational attainment acquired by a respondent in years. It was classified into three groups such as illiterate (no schooling), primary level (class I-V) and secondary level (class VI-X). Exposure to mass media was quantified on the basis of frequency of use of certain media like radio, television and printed materials. Categorization of exposure to mass media was no exposure, low exposure (once in a month); medium exposure (twice in a month) and high exposure (thrice or more in a month). Contact with extension agents was measured on the basis of contact of . respondents to the services rendered by extension agents of BRAC, DAE, Livestock Department, Fisheries Department and Fertilizer & Pesticides dealers. Level of contact was classified into high (once in every month), medium (once in every three months), low (once in every six months) and no contact.
