Efficiency Components of Small Scale Irrigation Systems in Bangladesh-a Review

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This paper reviews the food production and requirement status of Bangladesh as well as her irrigation system to support and boost the production. Efforts have been made by the government to attain autarky in food through small scale irrigation schemes but not much success bas been achieved. The cause of failure of these efforts is her inefficient irrigation system. to be specific, the inefficient components of the irrigation system. The technological causes making the system inefficient are highlighted and discussed in this article.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The efficiency of an irrigation project is influenced by its reservoir storage, conveyance system, and application method. and thus the over-all irrigation system and its component efficiencies can be expressed as :(ES )( Ec )( Ea ) El= 100 1UO "TuU X 100 . (1) where Ei e- irrigation efficiency, percent Storage component: ES=( Ws ) X 100 (2) Wao Where Es = reservoir storage efficinecy, percent Ws=volume of water delivered from the reservoir for irrigation. and Wso= volume of water delivered to the reservoir to be stored for irrigation. Conveyance component: EC=( We) XIOO 3) Wco where Ec=water conveyance efficiency percent We-volume of water delivered by the conveyance system, and Wco=volume of water delivered to tho conveyance system at the source of supply. Application component : Ea=( Wet+W-Re){Wax 100 (4) where Ea-e water application efficiency, percent Wet e.volume of irrigation water in a specified area transpired by plants and evaporated from the soil under desirable soil water levels. WI=volume of water necessary for leaching ( salt control) in the given area. Revolume of effective rainfall in the given area, and Wa-e volume of water applied to tho given area. An examination of the above con- ponent efficiency terms would give clues to the causes of the existing inefficient irrigation system in Bangladesh.

Irrigation wells and pumps should be located as dictated by the topographic and geologic map of the area. Water distribution channels from the pump have to conform to the topography of the land they should not be made unnecessarily wide, deep and specially. long to prevent water loss, Location of the wells. pumps, and the conveyance structures should not be guided by local influence. Once an irrigation pumping unit along with its distribution channels is installed in the field, regular servicing and maintenance of the whole system should be scheduled and ensured. Where possible electric motors should be used instead of the diesel operated engines to run the pumps; and farmers should be given basic technical know- hows and tips as to how to use the water efficiently and effectively.
