Studies on the Mature Larvae of Laslo Derma Serricorne (l.) and Stegobium Paniceum ( L. ) ( Coleoptra : Anobiidae)

Objectives:

To study mature larvae of the two species

Methodology:

The mature larvae of Lasioderma serricorne (F.) were reared on dried milk and those of Stegobium paniceum (L.) 00 ground red pepper. The cultures were maintained at 26°_28°C and 70-80% relative bimidity in the Research Institute of Food Industry. Prague, Czechoslo- vakia. The mature larvae were treated in chlorophenol solution for 24 hours followed by their mounting in chloral hydrate medium ( Liquidc-Swaan solu- tion). All dissections were made under a binocular microscope keeping the specimen on a slide with liquido Swaan solution on it. The figures were drawn with the help of camera Iucida. The descriptions were based on ten specimens of each species.

Achievement/Findings:

Abdomen: Abdomen 10. segmented; segment VIII widest and longest ; segment X smallest with a median ventral longitudinal depression. All abdominal seg- ments, except the last, with rows of scattered as perities on dorsal surface Segments 1- VIII each with inconspicuous spiracles, the spiracle having a short neck-like process often resembling figure 8. Although the larvae of the drug-store beetle and the cigarettes beetle are similar in general appearance, they may easily be distinguished by the shape and arrangement of the body setae, sclerotisation of the head capsule and structures of the epipharynx and spiracle. Moreover, the larvae of the drug-store beetle are rather less active than those of the cigarette beetle.
