Studies on the Crease-resistance Treatments of Jute Fabrics with Crossliking Agents and Polymer Emulsion

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The effect of concentrations of cross linking agents such as glyoxal, epichlarahdrin (ECH) and polymer emulsion such as siligen MIS on jute fabrics were studied using catalysts and swelling agent adopting pad-dry cure method. With all cross liking agents and polymer emulsion, dry crease recovery angle (DCRA) values were markedly increased by increasing the concentration of cross liking agents and the best results were obtained with gloxal. Dry crease recovery angle of jute fabrics treated with gloxal was higher than that of ECH vapor and siligen MSI treated fabrics.

Objectives:

To observe the effect of concentrations of cross linking agents and polymer emulsion on jute fabrics were studied using.

Methodology:

The scoured, bleached and mercerized jute fabrics of the same construction were used in this study. All chemicals used for pretreatments and finishing treatments were commercial grade except epichlorohydrin, gloxal, magnesium chloride and ammonium phosphate. The jute fabrics were singed, scoured, bleached and mercerized by standard methods. The action of cross liking agents viz. gloxal, epichlorohydrin and siligen MIS polymer emulsion on jute fabrics were studied according to following procedures. The bleached-mercerized jute fabrics were immersed in the solution containing gloxal in different percentages (2%, 4% to 10%) in presence of magnesium chloride (MgCl₂6H₂O) as catalyst at room temperature. Pad-dry cure method was applied in the treatments. The scoured-bleached jute fabrics were impregnated with sodium hydroxide of different percentages (2%, 4% to 10%) for 5 minutes at room temperature and finally pressed through a [air of squeeze rollers. Epichlrohydrin vapor was passed through the alkali treated fabrics. The exposed samples were then washed and dried in air. The cold nleached-mercerized and hot bleached-mercerized jute fabrics were treated with siligen MSI of different concentrations (2%, 4% to 10%) in presence of magnesium chloride and ammonium phosphate using Pad-dry cure method. DCRA of all samples treated in different ways was measured by Shirley crease recovery tester (sample under pressure for 3 minutes and recovery time 5 minutes).

Achievement/Findings:

It was observed that the DCRA increased with the increase in gloxal concentration. The effect of concentration of glyxal on the rate of improvement of DCRA was interesting. The improvement of CDRA was higher at low concentrations of glyoxal but at higher concentration this improvement was rather slow. The crease resistance of jute fabrics improved markedly below the concentration of 8%. But above the percentage , there was steady increase suggesting that the effective cross liking density was not markedly changed by varying the concentration of cross liking agent at higher level, It was also suggesting that gloxal perhaps reacted with cellulise of jute to form cress linkings with bis-semiacetal structure rather than with diacetal stricture and the resulting cross links contributed to the DCRA value of the fabrics. It was observed that the DCRA gradually increased with the increase of polymer concentration and this improvement was higher in the case of hot mercerized jute fabrics and ammonium phosphate (catalyst) based treatment.
