Incidence of Diphyllobothriidean Larva and Pallisetis Nandi in Nandus Nandus (haminton Buchanan) Fish

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An investigation was done to find out the incidence of Diphyllobothriidean larva and Pallisentis nandi in Nandus nandus during the period from January to December, 1979. In all 125 fish specimens collected from various fresh water bodies in and around Bangladesh Agricultural University Campus, Mymensingh were surveyed. 240 parasites comprising 168 Diphy IIobothriidean larva and 72 Pallisentis nandi were collected from 60 infected fishes. Diphyllobothriidean larva is collected from a fish for the first time in Bangladesh. The incidence of infection was found to vary with months, size and sex of the host fishes.

Objectives:

a) To detect the incidence of Diphyllobothriidean larva and Pallisent is nandi in Nandus nandus;

b) To make a detailed morphologicaI study of the two parasites with a view to finding out their taxonomic status; and

c) To find out the incidence of infection as well as their fluctuations with season, sex and size of the host fishes.

Methodology:

One hundred and seventy five live or freshly dead N. nandus from different water bodies such as ponds, ditches, beels, rivers, etc., in and around Bangladesh Agricultural University Campus, Mymensingh were collected during the period from January to December, 1979 for the present work.10- 12 fish samples of different sizes were collected randomly once a month.The collected fish samples were thoroughly and systematically inspected to collect the parasites immediately after collection as far as possible. The uninspected fishes, if any, were preserved in 5 % formalin solution and were sub- sequently inspected at the earliest opportunity. Before collection of parasites, the length, weight, condition of water body, sex of the fish etc., were recorded. Some of the collected cysts were broken to clear fix and stain the parasites. Before fixation, the live acanthocephalan (P. nandi) was left in tap water for at least one hour so that its protruded proboscis expands fully. Both the types of parasites were fixed in hot formalin acetic alcohol. The fixed parasites were then stained step by step with Semichon's acetic carmine. For convenience, head organs, proglottids, tails etc., were separated by microdissection with the help of sharp pointed needles and fine forceps under binocular dissecting microscope before staining. After staining clearing of the parasites was done by clove oil, and mounted in canadbalsam after washing in xylol. Drawings were made with the help of camera lucida. Measurements of the parasites were done by ocular- stage micrometer. For laboratory techniques, the different procedures were followed. Identification of the parasites was done.

Achievement/Findings:

The intensity of infection by the parasites in N. nandus was found to vary with months, sex and sometimes with size of the host specimens. In general, heavy infestation was found during the period of Summer (March-June); larger and female specimens were found to be more infected than the smaller and male specimens.
