Development of Resist Printing Technique on Jute Fabrics

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Resist printing technique is developed by using natural thickener (Guar gum). This thickener is used in different percentages to get optimum results in padding as well as in exhaust methods. Best results were obtained by using 2.5% thickener in padding method. The use of these natural materials is most important as printing paste thickener.Thus developed printing technique could be suitably adopted in the printing of fabrics for multi-colour products using natural thickener in padding methods.

Objectives:

To develop a Resist Printing Technique on jute fabrics.

Methodology:

Carpet backing cloth cotton fabrics were scoured with sodium carbonate-5g/l, lissapol-2ml/l and bleached with hydrogen peroxide (30v/v)= 8ml/l, Na₂SiO₃-5g/l, Na₂CO₃-1% at 80-85^oC for 1 hour and then washed and air dried. The bleached jute and cotton fabrics were printed with printing paste of pigment color using different percentages (2%. 2.5% & 4%) of natural thickener (Guar gum). After drying a part of the printed fabrics were dried with relative dye by padding for ground color and after drying in air the fabrics were steamed for 10 minutes at normal pressure. Another part of the printed fabrics was dried with exhaust method for ground color and the fabrics were cooled and rinsed with cold water and then dried in room temperature. The quality of the printed fabrics was analyzed as regards (i) Sharpness (visual observation of spreading) (ii) Rubbing fastness (5) Washing fastness (5) (v) light fastness(5).

Achievement/Findings:

Dyeing and Printing technologies are getting importance for development of decorative jute products like wall cover, wall mats and hangings etc. Resist printing is an old craft for making multicolor design on the decorative textile materials. Here this technique was tried to adopt in printing jute fabrics with multicolor design. From the above result and visual observation it indicated that printing of jute materials with resist technique could be done successfully as colour built up. Sharpness of design and registration on jute fabric were excellent compared with that of cotton fabric. As regard fastness of printed jute products, better fastness was achieved with resist padding techniques. Poor fastness property observed in the samples of resist-exhaust technique could be due to the interference of liquor in the system. Again overall poor light fastness of printed jute products may be improved with application of photo stabilizing agents. Thus resist printing technique could be suitably adopted in the printing of fabrics for multi-colour products using natural thickener in padding methods.
