Genetic Variation in the Component Characters of Photosynthetic Area Above Flag Lear Node and Yield in Spring Wheat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Eighteen spring wheat genotypes assessd during 1994-95 for variability, heritability and genetic advance in photosynthetic area, yield and yield attributes showed a wide range and significant variation. All the component characters exhibited high heritability together with high genetic advance.

Objectives:

To assess such information in 18 spring wheat genotypes for future plant breeding applications.

Methodology:

Seeds of the genotypes were sown on 22nd November, 1994 by following a randomized block design with three replications, at the field laboratory of the Deptt. of Genetics and plant Breeding, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. The plot size was 3 m x 1 m. Three irrigation were followed at crown root initiation, booting and anthesis stages. Data on flag leaf blade and sheath area, spike and total photosynthetic area, and photosynthetic capability was recorded. These data were gathered from the main stems of five randomly competative selected plants during anthesis. Yield components such as spikes per plant, grains per spike and 100-grain weights together with yield were also recorded during and after harvest. Finally,analysis of variance, mean, least significant difference (LSD), phenotypic and genotypic coefficients of variation, heritability and genetic advance in percentage of mean were calculated as proposed.

Achievement/Findings:

Finally, the genotypes has shown a wide range of variation for grain yield. DSN-l29 had produced the highest grain yield and SAN-2 produced the lowest. In general, most of the higher yielding genotypes DSN-l29 , DSN-72, SAN-77, DSN-118, YC-17 and DSN-30 produced higher numerical weights at least in one of the above yield components. Interesting that relations between the yield components appeared negative for most of the genotypes conferring their basic limitations in the differences of photosynthetic efficiency. This indirectly suggests that spectacular achievements may not be expected if these variability are used in future breeding applications without looking into the photosynthetic and partitioning efficiencies. Therefore, the component characters of photosynthetic area and yield deserve attention as indirect selection criteria for improving yield amongst these wheat genotypes
