Heterosis and Association Analysis of Leaf Yield and Its Components in Tobacco (nicotiana Tabacum L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The performance of 14 varieties of tobacco and the heterosis performances of their PI hybrids were studied. The results showed that in most cases heterosis for leaf yield was accompanied by simultaneous heterosis in leaf length and leaf breadth. The hybrid 7B X Robasta, gave the highest leaf yield of all the hyhribs and also had significant heterosis for leaf length over longer leaved parent and plant height. There is no considerable environmental influence on the characters as indicated by their higher genotypic correlation coefficients than the corresponding phenotypic coefficients.

Objectives:

To study heterosis in quantitative characters in hybrids obtained from 13 intervarietal crosses among 14 varieties.

Methodology:

In this study, 14 varieties of virginia tobacco and their 13 hybrids we're grown at the Genetics and Plant Breeding farm, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh in 1978. The 30 days old seedlings of the parental lines and the hybrids Were transplanted in a field with randomized-block design using three replications. Row to row and plant to plant distances Were 90 cm and 60 cm respectively. Non-experimental plants were grown around each replication to reduce border effects. Standard cultural practices were followed. Each entry conslsted of a single row of 10 plants. Data were recorded from 7 plan s selected at random from each entry for days to flower, plant height, number of leaves per plant, leaf length and leaf breadth and green leaf yield at the time of emergence of the inflorescence. The heterotic effects were considered as percentage of the mean value of F₁ over mean value of higher parent and mid-parent. Heterosis was tested by using the pooled error variance obtained from the analysis of variance of F₁ and parentaI population, Genotypic and phenotypic correlation co- efficient were calculated

Achievement/Findings:

Genotypic correlation co-efficient were significantly higher than the corresponding phenotypic co-efficient in most of the cases indicating no considerable environmental effect on the expression of different characters. There was positive correlation between leaf yield per plant with leaf length and leaf breadth indicating that latter two characters contributed to the leaf yield. A strong association of leaf breadth with all the characters was revealed through significant and positive correlation. Days to flower showed negative significant correlation with leaf length and leaf breadth. All the characters showed positive genotypic correlation with plant height except for number of leaves per plant. Number of leaves per plant was, however, negatively correlated with leaf length. Association of each of the characters with yield showed positive correlation which indicated that the components are of considerable significance to the breeder because component breeding would be effective under such situation.
