Evaluation of Tomato Genotypes in Respect of Some Morphological Attributes and Yield

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out at the experimental field of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during October 2006 to February 2007 to study the morphological attributes and yield of tomato genotypes. The experimental treatment consisted of eight genotypes namely M-1, M-6, M-20, M-58, M-16, M-83, Binatomato-5 and BARI tomato-7. Genotypic variations for plant height, number of primary branch plant^-1, number of flower cluster plant^-l, number of fruit cluster plan^-1, number of fruits plant^-1, fiuit weight plant^-1, individual fruit weight and yield (t ha^-1) were significant except days to first flowering. The genotypes M-20 and M-58 showed better performance compared to the other genotypes. Among the genotypes, the tallest and shortest plant was produced in BARI tomato-7 and M-83, respectively. Genotype M-20 produced the highest number of primary branch plant^-l, number of flower cluster plant^-l and number of fruit plant^-l where the lowest of them were observed in M-58, Binatomato-5 and M-83, respectively. The highest number of fruit cluster plant^-1 was in M-76 and the lowest was recorded in Binatomato-5. Individual fruit weight was the highest in M-l and the lowest in M-20. Genotype M-58 produced highest fruit weight plant^-1 (1249.33 g) and yield (65.53 t ha^-1).

Objectives:

To evaluate some morphological attributes and yield of tomato genotypes.
To select better genotypes in respect of quality of fruit and yield.

Methodology:

An experiment was carried out at the experimental field of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during the period from October 2006 to February 2007 to study the morphological attributes and yield of different genotypes of tomato. The experimental treatment consisted of eight genotypes namely M-1, M-6, M-20, M-58, M-16, M-83, Binatomato-5 and BARI tomato-7. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Cow dung, urea, TSP and MP were applied at the rate of 10 t ha^-1, 226, 222 and 250 kg ha^-1, respectively. Thirty day old seedlings of tomato genotypes were transplanted in the experimental plot in the afternoon of 31 October, 2006 immediately after transplanting the seedlings were properly watered. Data on some morphological, yield attributes and yield were recorded. The collected data were analyzed statistically following the analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique and the mean differences were adjusted with Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) using the statistical computer package program, MSTAT-C.
