Studies of Morpho Physiological Characteristics of Some Selected Aman Rice Varieties

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Six rice varieties of two types i.e., high yielding (modern) namely BRRI dhan30, BR23, BR22 and Binasail and local (traditional) varieties namely Pajam and Latisal were grown at Field Laboratory of the department of Crop Botany, BAU, Mymensingh to evaluate the morpho-physiological characters in Aman season. The local varieties were taller, possessed longer and narrower internodes than those of high yielding varieties. High yielding varieties had the higher number of photosynthetic active leaves than the local varieties. The flag leaves were longer, narrower and drooping in the local varieties in contrast to erect, broader and shorter leaves in high yielding varieties. Panicle length, number and length of primary branches/panicle and number of secondary branches differed significantly among the local and high yielding varieties showing a tendency of higher values in modern varieties compared to the traditional varieties. Two types of varieties showed distinction regarding the grain length, grain breadth and 1000-grain weight of primary and secondary branches which showed higher yield potential. High yielding varieties generally had higher values of leaf area index, total dry matter, crop growth rate, net assimilation rate and harvest index whereas local varieties gave higher values of specific leaf area.

Objectives:

To observe growth and yield performance of some transplanted Aman rice varieties.
To find out relationship between grain yield and morpho-physiological characters.

Methodology:

Six rice varieties of two types i.e., high yielding (modern) namely BRRI dhan30, BR23, BR22 and Binasail and local (traditional) varieties namely Pajam and Latisal were grown at Field Laboratory of the department of Crop Botany, BAU, Mymensingh to evaluate the morpho-physiological characters in Aman season. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The size of unit plot was 4m × 3m. The blocks were 1 m apart and the distance between unit plots was 0.5m. Urea, TSP, MP and Gypsum were at the rate of 150, 95, 70 and 60 kg ha^-1. On 25 August, 2001, 35 days old seedlings were transplanted in the puddle land with 20 cm row spacing and 15 cm apart from one another. Two seedlings were planted per hill. Data on morpho-physiological, yield attributes and yield were recorded. Analysis of variance was done following randomized complete block design with the help of computer package MSTAT-C (Russell, 1986). The mean difference among the treatment was tested with Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

The local varieties were taller than the high yielding varieties. The local varieties possessed longer and narrower internodes than those of high yielding varieties. High yielding varieties had the higher number of photosynthetic active leaves than the local varieties. The flag leaves were longer, narrower and drooping in the local varieties in contrast to erect, broader and shorter leaves in high yielding varieties. Binasail showed almost similar number of tillers from tillering to maturity. Panicle length, number and length of primary branches/panicle and number of secondary branches differed significantly among the local and high yielding varieties showing a tendency of higher values in modern varieties compared to the traditional varieties. Two types of varieties showed distinction regarding the grain length, grain breadth and 1000-grain weight of primary and secondary branches which showed higher yield potential. High yielding varieties generally had higher values of leaf area index (LAI), total dry matter (TDM), crop growth rate (CGR), net assimilation rate (NAR) and harvest index (Hl) whereas local varieties gave higher values of specific leaf area (SLA). High yielding and local varieties exhibited their differences in total growth duration.
