Effect of Municipal Solid Waste Slurry from Biogas Plant on Soil Micro Environment and Yield of Spinach

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted to study the effect of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) slurry on soil microenvironment and yield of spinach. Among the treatments performance, 20 ton/ha slurry was superior to other treatments for organic matter and available P. Twenty ton/ha slurry + 50% of the recommended fertilizer treatment was superior for soil moisture, total nitrogen, exchangeable K and available S. For ensuring of organic farming, improving soil microenvironment and soil health, 20 ton/ha slurry + 50% of the recommended fertilizer dose is the best. Application of MSW slurry had significant positive effect on plant height, number of leaves per plant and individual plant weight over control. Twenty ton/ha slurry + 50% of the recommended fertilizer treated plants showed maximum plant height, maximum leaf number per plant, and 20 ton/ha slurry treated plant showed maximum individual plant weight which were statistically differed over control plants. Rate of photosynthesis did not vary significantly due to the application of MSW slurry. The highest yield (9.85 t/ha) was recorded in 10 ton/ha slurry + 50% of the recommended fertilizers treated treatment and the lowest yield (7.25 t/ha) in control treatment.

Objectives:

To examine the effect of Minicipal Slurry Waste (MSW) from biogas plant on the growth, yield components and yield of spinach plant, soil micro environment.
To evaluate the organic matter status on the slurry and possibility of using as organic fertilizer.

Methodology:

A field experiment was conducted at the Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) during November-December 2012 to study the effect of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) slurry on soil microenvironment and yield of spinach. A high yielding spinach variety “Copi palong” was used as test crop in the experiment. The treatments were as follows: T0=no slurry (control), T₁=10 ton/ ha slurry, T₂=20 ton/ha slurry, T₃=10 ton/ha + 50% of the recommended fertilizers and T₄=20 ton/ha + 50% of the recommended fertilizers. The unit plot size was 2m × 2m and plots were separated from each other by drains (50 cm). Nitrogen (N) @ 100 kg ha^-1 from urea, phosphorus (P) @ 14 kg ha^-1 from triple super phosphate (TSP), potassium (K) @ 30 kg ha^-1 from muriate of potash (MP), sulphur (S) @ 15 kg ha^-1 from gypsum were applied in the control plot and 50% of all fertilizers were applied in the treatment (T₃ and T₄). The MSW slurry (wet basis) was incorporated in the plots as per treatment at 3 days before sowing and after two days they were mixed thoroughly with the soil. Before sowing seeds were soaked in water for 18 hours. Three seeds per hole were planted in order to ensure uniform stand of the crops on 15 November 2012. Data on photosynthesis, yield component and yield of spinach and soil micro environment were recorded. Analysis of variance was done following randomized complete block design with the help of computer package MSTAT-C (Russell, 1986). The mean difference among the treatment was tested with Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).
