Effect of Split Application of N-fertilizer on Growth and Yield Attributes of Winter Mongbean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh, during the period from September to November 2002 to find out the effect of split application of N-fertilizer on growth and yield attributes of winter mungbean. Treatment comprised of three cultivated high yielding mungbean varieties viz., Binamoog-4, BARI mung-4 and BARI mung-5. Fertilizer (urea) was given as no urea applied (control), urea at one time (25 DAS), urea at two splits (25 and 35 DAS) and urea at three splits (25, 35 and 45 DAS) where total quantity of urea was 45 kg/ha. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) where each treatment replicated three times. Plant height, number of branches/plant, number of leaves/plant, leaf area/plant, chlorophyll content and nitrate reductas activity in leaves, number of pods/plant, number of seeds/plant, 1000-seed weight, seed yield/plant, total dry matter/plant and harvest index were found the highest when urea was applied at two splits followed by three splits and full dose of urea at 25 DAS compared to no fertilizer application. Among the varieties Binamoog-4 showed the best performance on the above parameters.

Objectives:

To observe growth and yield of winter mungbean under split application of nitrogen fertilizer treatments.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh, during the period from September to November 2002 to find out the effect of split application of N-fertilizer on growth and yield attributes of winter mungbean. Treatment comprised of three cultivated high yielding mungbean varieties viz., Binamoog-4, BARI mung-4 and BARI mung-5. Each pot contained 6 kg of soil collected from BINA farm. TSP and MP were applied at the rate of 100 and 60 kg/ha respectively. Fertilizer (urea) was given as no urea applied (control), urea at one time (25 DAS), urea at two splits (25 and 35 DAS) and urea at three splits (25, 35 and 45 DAS) where total quantity of urea was 45 kg/ha. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The plants were harvested at 35, 45 days after sowing and at maturity. Leaf chlorophyll content was determined following the formula and procedure as outlined by Arnon (1949) and nitrate rductase activity by Stwart and Orebamjo (1979). Data on morpho-physiological, yield attributes and yield were recorded. Analysis of variance was done following randomized complete block design with the help of computer package MSTAT-C (Russell, 1986). The mean difference among the treatment was tested with Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).
