Salinity Tolerance Studies of Some Transplanted Aman Rice Cultivars

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was conducted at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh to evaluate salinity tolerance level of rice cultivars viz., BRRI dhan40, Binasail and Vatial (local) during July to December, 2001. Salinity levels were 4.3 and 8.6 dSm^-1with a control. Plant height, number of tillers, green leaves, leaf area, root volume and total dry matter were more or less gradually decreased with increasing salinity levels in all cultivars. These characters were found to be highest in BRRI dhan40, which were statistically similar to Binasail. The yield and yield contributing characters of the cultivar Vatial, were drastically decreased with the increase levels of soil salinity. The chemical analysis revealed that the content of sodium ions increased and potassium ions decreased in leaf. Calcium ions content of the plant leaves were little affected. Total dry matter and grain yield of the rice cultivars were negatively correlated with the concentrations of salt. However, among the cultivars, BRRI dhan40 and Binasail contained lower sodium ions in leaves and showed yield up to 8.6 dSm-¹soil salinity. BRRI dhan40 and Binasail showed tolerant to salinity and the cultivar, Vatial showed its susceptibility to salinity.

Objectives:

To assess the effect of salinity on growth, yield and yield contributing characters of transplanted aman rice cultivars.
To observe uptake of Na⁺, K⁺ and Ca⁺⁺ ions in leaves and to find out salt tolerant cultivar.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was conducted at of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh to evaluate salinity tolerance level of rice cultivars viz., BRRI dhan40, Binasail and Vatial (local) during July to December, 2001. Salinity levels were 4.3 and 8.6 dSm^-1with a control. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Completely Block Design with three replications. Each pot contained 8 kg of soil collected from BINA farm. Urea, TSP, MP and Gypsum were applied at the rate of 170 kg urea, 135 kg TSP, 65 kg MP and 60 kg Gypsum per hectare. Three seedlings of 26 days old were transplanted in each pot. Amount of salt calculation for salinity development was done according to Michael (1978) and Ponnamperuma (1984). Data on morpho-physiological attributes and yield were recorded. Data were analyzed statistically to find out the levels of significance using the MSTAT-C package program. Duncan’s Multiple Range Text (DMRT) was used to compare the differences of means.

On the other hand, effective tillers, non-effective tillers, panicle length, filled grain, unfilled grain, 1000-grain weight, grain yield and harvest index (HI) were reduced with the increase levels of salinity compared to control. The chemical analyses revealed that the content of sodium ions increased and potassium ions decreased in leaf. Calcium ions content of the plant leaves were little affected. Total dry matter and grain yield of the rice cultivars were negatively correlated with the concentrations of salt. However, among the cultivars, BRRI dhan40 and Binasail contained lower sodium ions in leaves and showed yield up to 8.6 dSm-¹soil salinity. BRRI dhan 40 and Binasail showed tolerant to salinity and the cultivar, Vatial showed its susceptibility to salinity.
