Salinity Tolerance of Summer Mungbean Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was conducted at the pot yard of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during the period from 28 February to 12 April 2007 with five mungbean genotypes viz., E₁J-606, N₂M-402, E₁J-608, Binamoog-5 and Binamoog-7 subjected to salinity at 5 (dSm^-1) at pre-flowering, flowering and pod formation stage with a control. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Completely Block Design with three replications. Results revealed that the effect of salinity at different growth stages of mungbean genotypes was significant on plant height, number of primary branches plant^-1, leaf area plant^-1, dry matter production in roots, stems, leaves, pod dry weight and total dry matter, number of pods plant^-1, number of seeds plant^-1, 1000-seed weight, seed yield plant^-1and harvest index. Salinity at pod formation stage showed the better performance followed by salinity at flowering stage. Plant height, number of branches, number of leaves, pod dry weight, number of pods plant^-1, number of seeds plant^-1, number of seeds plant^-1 and total dry matter were the highest in N₂M-402 compared to other genotypes.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were to assess the effect of salinity at different growth stage on morphological and yield attributing characters of mungbean genotypes and to find out salt tolerant genotype.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was conducted at the pot yard of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during period from 28 February to 12 April 2007 with five mugbean genotypes viz., E₁J-606, N₂M-402, E₁J-608, Binamoog-5 and Binamoog-7 subjected to salinity at 5 (dSm^-1) at pre-flowering, flowering and pod formation stage with a control. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Completely Block Design with three replications. Each pot contained 8 kg of soil collected from BINA farm. Urea, TSP and MP were applied 0.09, 0.16 and 0.16 g respectively at the rate of 18, 30 and 36 kg ha^-1 of N, P and K respectively. Mungbean seeds were sown in each pot on 28 February 2007. Amount of salt calculation for salinity development was done according to Michael (1978) and Ponnamperuma (1984). Data on morpho-physiological attributes and yield were recorded. Data were analyzed statistically to find out the levels of significance using the MSTAT-C package program. Duncan’s Multiple Range Text (DMRT) was used to compare the differences of means.
