Effect of Soil Moisture on Growth, Yield and Biochemical Attributes of Grasspea Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was conducted at the pot yard of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh with four grasspea genotypes viz. Binakhesari-1, GPM-1W, GPM-2W and GPM-3W under different soil moisture levels of 80, 60 and 40% FC during November 2004 to February 2005. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The results showed that 80% FC was found most suitable for optimum growth and yield of the genotypes. Plant height, number of branches per plant, number of leaves per plant, leaf area per plant, stem weight per plant, leaf weight per plant, total dry matter per plant, total chlorophyll, chlorophyll-a, chlorophyll-b, chlorophyll-a/b, relative water content, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per plant and grain yield per plant decreased and total sugar and reducing sugar increased with the decrease of soil moisture levels. But root weight per plant, 100-seed weight and harvest index were not affected by the soil moisture levels. Binakhesari-1, GPM-1W and GPM-W performed better under the soil moisture levels compared to GPM-3W.

Objectives:

To observe the effect of different moisture levels on grasspea genotypes.
To find out suitable moisture level for optimum growth and the yield.
To identify drought tolerant grasspea genotype.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was conducted at the pot yard of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh with four grasspea genotypes viz. Binakhesari-1, GPM-1W, GPM-2W and GPM-3W under different soil moisture levels of 80, 60 and 40% FC during November 2004 to February 2005. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Each pot contained 8 kg of soil collected from BINA farm.The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications Fertilizers Urea 0.28 g pot^-1, TSP 0.52 g pot^-1 and MP 0.36 g pot^-1 at the rate of 35 kg N ha^-1, 65 kg P₂O₅ ha^-1and 45 kg K₂O ha^-1were applied. Seeds of grasspea genotypes were sown on 11 November 2004. Water stress was applied at 20 days after sowing. Data on morpho-physiological, yield attributes and yield were recorded. The collected data were analyzed statistically following two factor experiment in RCBD with the help of MSTAT computer packages (Russell, 1986). The mean values of the treatments were adjudged by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

Achievement/Findings:
