Effect of Sulphur Fertilization on the Yield and Yield Components of Mustard Varieties

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out at the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from October 1987 to February 1988 with four high yielding varieties of mustard viz. BAU-M/12 (Sampad), BAU-M/ 248 ( Sambal ), M-257 and SS-75 ( Sonali Sarisha ) ;and five levels of sulphur viz. 0, 10, 20, 30 and 40 kg per hectare. It was to determine the appropriate rate of sulphur for each of the variety under study in order to maximize the seed yield of mustard. The seed yield was maximum in BAU-M/24B ( Sambal) when fertilized with sulphur at the rate of 40 kg per hectare in comparison to other varieties and other rate of sulphur. The variety sampad followed "Sambal" in respect of seed yield at this level of sulphur fertilizer. The seed yield of M/257 and SS-75 ( Sonali Sarisha ) were found to be maximum at 30 kg sulphur per hectare. The crop was harvested at maturity. Ten plants were randomly selected from each unit plot at harvest and the entire plots were separately harvested to record the data on yield components and yield. Objectives:

To find out the appropriate rate of sulphur for each of BAU-M / 12 ( Sampad ), BAU-M I 248, ( Sambal), M/257 and SS- 75 ( Sonali Sarisha ) variety of mustard in order to obtain the maximum seed yield

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at t he Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University. Mymensingh during the period from October 1987 to February 1988. The treatments were four high yielding varieties of mustard viz. BAU-M/12 ( Sampad ), BAU-M / 248 ( Sambal ), M/257 and SS-75 (Sonali Sarisha); and five rates of sulphur viz. 0 .10, 20, 30 and 40 kg per hectare. The experiment was laid out in a split plot design with varieties in the majn plots and rates of sulphur in the sub-plots. The treatments were replicated thrice. The area of each unit plot was ten square metre (4m x 2.5m).

Achievement/Findings:

From the above findings it may be concluded that the mustard crop should be fertilized with sulphur at 40 kg per hectare in addition to recommended rates of N, P₂O₅ and K₂O in order to obtain the maximum seed yield. This is especially true for varieties Sambal and Sampad. The variety Sonali and M-257 should preferably be fertilized with 30 kg sulphur per hectare in addition to usual rates of N, P₂O₅ and K₂0 to ma ximize the yield of seed. This varied response of different varieties suggests that for every variety of mustard there should be a different and appropriate rate of sulphur fertilizer. However, further researches rnay be carried out with different varieties and different rates of sulphur at various agro-ecological zones of Bangladesh to arrive at a definite conclusion
