Effect of Salinity on Growth, Yield and Yield Contributing Characters of Lentil Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was conducted at the pot yard of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, during the period from 8 November 2004 to 13 March 2005 to assess the effect of salinity stress on growth and yield attributes of three high yielding lentil genotypes, namely LM-30-3, E₅M-1018 and BARI masur-4. There were three salinity levels viz. Control (where only water was applied), 4dS/m and 6 dS/m. Salinity was induced by adding NaCl salt solution at 45 days after sowing. The experiment was laid out Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Results indicated that plant height, number of branch, number of leaves, leaf area, total dry matter and seed yield decreased with increasing salinity levels and the highest growth was recorded under controlled condition. The yield attributes were affected significantly by increasing the levels of salinity stress compared to that of control. Plant height, number of pod, number of seed, 1000-seed weight, seed yield and harvest index were the highest in E₅M-1018 compared to those of LM-30-3 and BARI masur-4. Number of branches, number of leaves and leaf area were the highest in LM-30-3.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were to assess the effect of salinity on morpho-physiological and yield attributes of lentil genotypes and to find out salt tolerant genotype.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was conducted at the pot yard of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh, during the period from 8 November 2004 to 13 March 2005 to assess the effect of salinity stress on growth and yield attributes of three high yielding lentil genotypes, namely LM-30-3, E₅M-1018 and BARI masur-4. There were three salinity levels viz. Contol (where only water was applied), 4dS/m and 6 dS/m. Salinity was induced by adding NaCl salt solution at 45 days after sowing. The experiment was laid out Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Each pot contained 8 kg of soil collected from BINA farm. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications Fertilizers Urea 0.256 g pot^-1, TSP 0.616 g pot^-1 and MP 0.256 g pot^-1 at the rate of 32 kg N ha^-1, 77 kg P₂O₅ ha^-1and 32 kg K₂O ha^-1were applied. Seeds of lentil genotypes were sown on 8 November 2004. Salinity was imposed at 60 days after sowing. Data on morpho-physiological, yield attributes and yield were recorded. The collected data were analyzed statistically following two factor experiment in RCBD with the help of MSTAT computer packages (Russell, 1986). The mean values of the treatments were adjudged by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).
