Effect of Soil Moisture on Growth, Yield and Biochemical Attributes of Lentil Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conduct at the pot yard of Bangladesh institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during November 2004 to March 2005 to study the effects of different moisture levels on some lentil genotypes with a check variety (Barimasur-4). Two factors (a) moisture levels (80% FC, 60% FC and 40% FC) and (b) genotypes (Barimasur-4, E₅M-1018, LM-30-3 and LM-30-5) were included in the experiment. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The results revealed that the plant height, number of branch plant^-1, number of leaves plant^-1, relative water content, root weight plant^-1, stem weight plant^-1, leaf weight plant^-1, total dry matter plant^-1, total chlorophyll, chlorophyll-a, chlorophyll-b, chlorophyll ratio (a/b), total sugar, reducing sugar, number of pods plant^-1, 1000-seed weight and seed weight plant^-1,, were maximum in the 60% FC. The most satisfactory seed yield plant^-1 was obtained from the 60% FC followed by 40% and 80% FC. Barimasur-4 showed the best performance under the treatments.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were to observe the effect of different moisture levels on lentil genotypes, to find out suitable moisture level for optimum growth and the yield and to identify drought tolerant lentil genotype.

Methodology:

The experiment was conduct at the pot yard of Bangladesh institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during November 2004 to March 2005 to study the effects of different moisture levels on some lentil genotypes with a check variety (Barimasur-4). Two factors (a) moisture levels (80% FC, 60% FC and 40% FC) and (b) genotypes (Barimasur-4, E₅M-1018, LM-30-3 and LM-30-5) were included in the experiment. Each pot contained 8 kg of soil collected from BINA farm. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications Fertilizers Urea 0.256 g pot^-1, TSP 0.616 g pot^-1 and MP 0.256 g pot^-1 at the rate of 32 kg N ha^-1, 77 kg P₂O₅ ha^-1and 32 kg K₂O ha^-1were applied. Seeds of lentil genotypes were sown on 11 November 2004. Water stress was applied at 20 days after sowing. Data on morpho-physiological, yield attributes and yield were recorded. The collected data were analyzed statistically following two factor experiment in RCBD with the help of MSTAT computer packages (Russell, 1986). The mean values of the treatments were adjudged by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).
