Effects of Supplementary Feed in Carps Polycul Ture System

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two ingredients viz. mustard oil cake and rice bran were mixed in two different proportion at 1 : 1 ( feed-A ) and 1 : 3 ( Feed-B ) and used as supplementary feed for carps in polyculture. Six ponds were used. Stocking density was 5000 fish fingerlings/ ha. The species employed were silver carp ( Hypophthalmichthys molitrix ). catla ( Catla catla ), rohu ( Labeo rohita ), mrigal ( Cirrhina mrigala ) and grass carp ( Ctenopharyngodon idella ) at the ratio of 3 :1, 2:5, 2:5:1 respectively. After ten months of culture, the gross production obtained were 3670 kg/ha and 3335 kg/ha by using feed-A and feed-B respectively. Statistical analysis showed that there was a significant difference ( P≥0.05 ) between the two feed, when the gross production was concerned. However, with respect to the net profit earned from the production, the economics of the two feed stood the same.

Objectives:

ln view of the foregoing, two readily available local products were used as feed ingredients in two different proportions and their effects were compared in fish production under polyculture.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Fisheries Research Institute, Fresh water Station, Mymensingh for a period of ten months from December, 1989 to September, 1990. Two feed ( A and B) were prepared with different rations of mustard oil cake and rice bran. The feed A consisted of mustard oil cake (50%) and rice barn (50%) and the feed B prepared with mustard oil cake (25%) and rice bran (75%). The trials for each feed had three replications thus employing six ponds of size 0.1 ha each for the study. The ponds were stocked with silver carp (H. molitrix) catla (C. catla), rohu (L. rohita) mrigal (C. mrigala) and grass carp ( C. idella ). at the ratio of 3:1, 2.5, 2.5 :1 respectively. In each pond ten black carp (Mylopharyngodon piscius) were stocked to control the snail. The fishes were fed @ 3% body weight daily. Weekly records of both physico-chemical parameters, viz.; water temperature, transparency, dissolved oxygen, pH and hardness, and biological parameter such as productivity were made. Achievement/Findings:

In the present study, it was evident that the level of income was influenced by the cost of inputs used. The supplementary feed used were cheap and easily available in the form of agricultural bi-products and they are proteinous as well. The rural people of Bangladesh can easily use this agricultural bi-products as fish feed at even higher ratio of rice bra, at 75% with mustard oil cake and increase fish production by significantly reducing t he cost of production.
