Effect of Salinity on Ion Uptake and Yield of Mustard

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during the period from October 2004 to January 2005 to study the effects of different salinity levels on three mustard genotypes viz. Binasarisha-3, Binasarisha-4, and Binasarisha-5. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design where the salinity levels were controlled, 4dSm^-1, 8dSm^-1 and 12dSm^-1. Plant height, number of branches, number of leaves and total dry matter plant^-1 gradually decreased, while Na⁺, content in leaves increased with the increase in salinity levels. The mustard variety Banasarisha-5 showed the highest plant height, the height number of siliqua, siliqua dry weight, seed yield per plant, harvest index and medium K⁺ content in leaves under the salinity treatments. Binasarisha-4 showed the highest 1000-grain weight and K⁺ content in leaves. On the other hand, the highest Ca⁺⁺ and Mg⁺⁺ content in leaves was found at 4 dsm^-1 followed by 8 dsm^-1 and 12 dsm^-1. Among the varieties, Binasarisha-5 seemed to possess some tolerance, Binasarisha-4 was intermediate and Binasarisha-3 showed less tolerance to salinity stress.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were to investigate the effect of salinity on some morphological characters, ion uptake in leaves and to find out dry matter production and yield of the mustard genotypes under different salinity levels.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during the period from October 2004 to January 2005 to study the effects of different salinity levels on three mustard genotypes viz. Binasarisha-3, Binasarisha-4, and Binasarisha-5. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design where the salinity levels were controlled, 4dSm^-1, 8dSm^-1 and 12dSm^-1. Each pot contained 8 kg of soil collected from BINA farm. Well rotten cowdung 8.4 g pot^-1 at the rate of 1200 kg ha^-1 was mixed with the soil. Fertilizers Urea 1.57 g pot^-1, TSP 0.5 g pot^-1, MP 0.21 g pot^-1, 1.05 Gypsum g pot^-1and 0.08 g pot^-1 Borax at the rate of Urea 225 kg ha^-1, TSP 75 kg ha^-1, MP 30 kg ha^-1, Gypsum 150 kg ha^-1 and Borax 12 kg ha^-1were applied. Mustard seeds were sown on 16 October 2004. Salinity treatments were imposed at 35 days after sowing by adding different amounts of salts. Data on morpho-physiological attributes were recorded at 60 days after sowing and at maturity, yield and yield attributes were recorded. The collected data were analyzed statistically following two factor experiment in RCBD with the help of MSTAT computer packages (Russell, 1986). The mean values of the treatments were adjudged by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).
