Study on Improvement of Nitrogen Use Efficiency in Aus Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In Bangladesh, there are three distinct rice crops. aus, aman and boro, Aus is sown in the period from March to May and harvested from June to August. Among the fertilizer elements nitrogen is universally needed for all soils. Improper Use of fertilizers, instead of giving increased yield, may even reduce it. To obtain the most efficient use of fertilizer, it is necessary to apply the fertilizers in accordance with the needs of the plants at different stages of development Methods of application also play an important role in the management of nitrogen fertilizer owing to the fact that the applied N fertilizer is subjected to heavy losses particularly in our climatic conditions. According to Allison about 50-60% of the added nitrogen is available to plants and the rest is lost in various ways. Appropriate methods and time of application go a long way to minimize these losses.

Objectives:

To study. the effect of time of nitrogen fertilizer application on the rice crop yield, the efficiency of different methods of nitrogen fertilizer placement and the efficiency of sulphur coated urea on growth and yield.

Methodology:

The present work was, therefore undertaken to study. the effect of time of nitrogen fertilizer application on the rice crop yield, the efficiency of different methods of nitrogen fertilizer placement and the efficiency of sulphur coated urea on growth and yield. This study was conducted on a typical rice growing land of the Agronomy Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from April to July, 1977. The soil was sandy loam in nature having pH value of 6.6 to 6.9. The cultivar Chari- dins ( IR 532.1-176 ) introduced by the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute in 1979 was used as test crop variety .The experiment was laidout in randomized block design with four replication. The net size of each unit plot was 5m x 3m. The bolder seeds of Chandina were selected by specific gravity method. After sun dry, the selected seeds were treated with Gr8Do58n M at the rate of 28 g per 37 kg of seed. Seedling was done on April, 1977. Seeds were sown in 25 em apart by handat the rate of 67 kg I ha. Weeding,mulching, thinning and other necessary cultural operations were done as and hen necessary. The crop was Attacked by stem borer (Tryporyza incertulasy at tbe vegetative phase, which was successfully controlled by applying Bas-udin at the rate of 11 kg/ha, The crops of individual plots were harvested on maturity. Data on individual characters were recorded from ten randomly selected plants from each treatment plot. The collected data were analyzed statistically

Achievement/Findings:

Yields of straw was highest with application of urea at 80 kg N/ha which was statistically significant. Here the method of application showed significant effect. The same dose when applied in 3 splits. was significantly worse than application in band twice. Straw yield comprises of vegetative growth for which higher dose acted well. But its effect was well tagged with method.
