Ecological Studies of Lippie Nodiflora Rich in Relation to Its Community

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was undertaken to investigate the community of Lippia nodiflora Rich of two stands, sunny-dry-slope (H-1) and shady-moist-plain (H-2). Both the stands were covered with most of the weeds. The variations were observed of a particular species in leaf area, internode length, stem circum- ference, number of hairs per unit area, stem epidermis and hypo dermis, stomata, cortex, Pith ratio, relative water content and soil moisture content. Jaccard's co-efficient and co-efficient of similarity between the two stands were calculated. Jaccard's community co-efficient was 44.1% and the co-efficient of similarity was 63.2%.

Objectives:

To study the ecology of Lippie nodiflora Rich in relation to its community.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at Rajshahi in two different types of habitats with natural stands of plant cover. Habitat one (H-1) was a sunny slope along the bank of the Padma exposed to direct solar radiation and Habitat two :(H-2) was a shady plain adjacent to the Botany Building, Rajshahi University. The criteria for selection of stand were that in both the stands Lippia nodiflora plant was common accompanied with other species. Replicated soil samples were collected from each of the two habitats. The depth of collections being 0-19 cm. The soil moisture percentage was calculated on oven dry basis. Each of the stand was curveted at fortnight interval by point quadrate method. During each survey the points were taken along ten parallel lines. The lines were at distance of 30 cm from each other and 250 points were studied. The results were recorded as percentage cover for the species met with. Relative water content (RWC) is a ratio expressed as a parentage of the amount of water in a known quantity of tissue when sampled to the amount of water when fully turgid. The apical part of a branch with four leaves was used as a sample and quickly weighed in a Torsion balance. The samples were taken at 9-30 a. m. as at this time the tissue water content is closely related to the soil moisture conditions. After weighing, the samples were placed with the cut end in 2.5 earn water in stoppered test tubes and allowed to take up water for 24 hours in the dark. Then the turgid samples were taken from the tubes, dried between soft 'kin wipes' dispersal wipers and re-weighed. They were then oven dried at 105⁰C for 48 hours. Comparative measurements of different vegetative parts like length and circumference of the 4th internode (counted back from the apex), leaf are, hairs on the lamina etc. were also studied. Transverse sections through 4th internode were made for anatomical studies.
