Serum Calcium and Phosphorus Values in Sheeps of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two hundred and eighty six sheep of different age and sex were used. The serum calcium and phosphorus values varied from 6.96•8.91 mg% and 3.72 -4.85 mg% respectively. Calcium and phosphorus values decreased with the increase of age. Lactating ewes had the lowest serum calcium content. Castrated animals had higher calcium and phosphorus values than un castrated animals. Calcium value was higher in summer whereas the phosphorus value was higher in winter.

Objectives:

To find out the normal value of serum calcium and phosphorus and to observe the influence of age, sex season, pregnancy, lactation, dry period and castration, if any.

Methodology:

Two hundred and eighty six sheep of Shambogonj Sheep farm, Mymensingh were used in this study. All the animals were apparently healthy and allowed to graze on a free range system in the plains of river Brahmmaputra. They were supplied water ad libitum, The sheeps were divided into uncastrated group (Birth- 6 months, 7-12 months, 13-18 months, 19-24 months. 25-30 months ). The animals of the first age group were assigned to 8 6 x 2 factorial experiment while the animals of the second group were assigned to 8 3 x 2 , factorial experiment. Each group consisted of 20 sheep. One hundred and twenty six sheep were divided in To different age group status (before pregnancy, pregnancy, lactation and dry period). The animals of the former groups were assigned to a 3 x 2 factorial experiment, while the later were assigned to a 4 x 2 factorial experiment. Each group consisted of 18 animals. About 10 ml of blood were collected by jugular vein puncture in the morning. Serum samples were collected by allow ing the blood to clot and squeeze in a slanting position at 4°C in the refrigerator for 8 hours. These were separated and kept at - , 15°C to await analysis of calcium and phosphorus. Serum calcium and phosphorus were determined by spectrophoto metric method using spectronic-20 ( BAUSCH & LOMB, 820 ). The values were analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

The serum calcium value varied from 6.96 to 8.91 mg%. The highest serum calcium value was found in first age group (birth-6 months) which differs significantly with all other age groups. The values decreased gradually with the advancement of age The serum calcium content in castrated animals (Table 2) were higher than uncastrated animals but the differences were insignificant. Serum phosphorus value was significantly higher in lamb of birth to 6 months of age. Castrated animals had the higher phosphorus value than un castrated animals but differences a re insignificant. Serum phosphorus values were higher in winter. The finding of this investigation may be useful to the clinicians and researchers as an aid to diagnose diseases and in biomedical research.
