Response of Jute (d-154) to Fertilization on Two Soils of Bangladeseh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Response of jute to N fertilization is well known (Dargan, 1971; Joseph, 1976 ; Gupta and Bhattacharya, 1978 and Borthakur et 01, 1981). Bangladesh Jute Research Institute also showed significant responses of jute to N application in different regions of Bangladesh. Reports on the response of jute to P fertilization are conflicting. Bangladesh Jute Research Institute in its earlier work showed some positive response of jute to P application (Proc. Ann. Rep. Pak. Central Jute Commission. 1960-63 ) while its later work showed no res pose of jute to P addition except for seed production. Hussain ( 1975) obtained higher fibre yields of jute when N and P applied together than when they were applied separately. Jute was found to respond to K fertilization in the presence of P at Sarbhog, India.

Objectives:

To ascertain the requirements of N, P, K, S. and Zn to exploit: the full yield potential of a white jute crop in two soils of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Two identical field experiments with Jute (C. capsularis var, D-IS4 ) as test crop were conducted in Mymensingh and Jamalpur representing Grey Flood- plain (Sonatola series) and Non-calcareous Dark Grey Floodplain (Kendua series) Soils, respectively. Major properties of the soils are presented in Table 1. Fertilizer doses used in the experiment were nitogen (N) @ 20. Nl~' 40 (N'l) and 60 (N₃ ) kg N/ha, phosphorus (P ) @ 40 kg P₂0& I baa potassium (K) @ 40 kg K,O/ha, sulphur (S) @ 20 kg S/ba and Zine ( Zn ) @ 4 kg Zn/ha from urea T. S. P., muriate of potash gypsum and zinc oxide, respectively. There were eight treatment combinations viz. con- trol, N1, N2, N2P, N2PK, N2PKS, N2PKSZn and NaPKSZn. Bach treat- ment was replicated 4 times in rando- mized block design having individual plot size of 4m x Sm. All fetilizer nutrient except N were applied at the time of sow ing, Nitrogen as urea was applied in two equal split; half at the time of sowing & the rest half 45 days after sowing. Leaf samples were collected for chemical analysis at 45 days after sowing prior to top dressing of urea and at harvest.

Achievement/Findings:

Plant height was significantly affected only at Mymensingh. Significant increases in the height of plant was mainly due to 1> addition to the treatment of N. Application of N also caused an apparent increase in the height of jute plant. Plant height in Jamalpur experiment fellowed similar trend although the effect of treatments was not statistically significant. Yields of jute fibre and sticks in both the locations were significantly affected due to various treatments. In Mymensingh significant change in both fiber and stick yields of jute caused mainly duo to addition of P to tho treatment. Application of N also caused substantial increases in the yields of jute but the differences with the control was not statistically Significant until N was applied in combination with p. Effect of K. Sand Zn was not significant
