Helminth Parasites of Edible Frog Rana Tigrina (daudin) with Notes on Their Infestations

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Investigations on helminth parasites of edible frog (Rana tigrina ) in and around Banqladesh Agricultural university Campus during April to September. 1982, revealed seven species of parasites-two species of trematodes (Geneo tiqrinum, Diplodiscus subclavatus ), two species of cestodes ( Proteocepbelus tigrinus, Proteocephelus sp, ). One species of acanthocehphalan ( Pallisentis ophio- cephali) and two species of nematodes (Rhabdies sp.. Gendrie sp.). D. subclavatus and P. tigrinus were the new record from Bangladesh and P., ophiocephali was the new record from the host mentioned. Incidence and intensity of Infestation were touno to be related to sex and size and season of the 'year. Male and' larger spacimens were found to be more infested than females and the smaller specimens.

Objectives:

To identify the helminth parasites infesting this frog, their incidences and intensity of infestation.

Methodology:

A total of 81 specimens of Rana tiqrins were collected from the fields, low lands, drains and ditches in and around the Bangladesh Agricultural University Campus, Mymensingh during April to September, 1982. They were caught at night with the help of hand net. The collected frogs were brought alive to the laboratory and kept alive in separate glass aquaria for subsequent observation. Then the total lengths (snout to vent) and weight of the hosts were measured and sexes were noted. For collection of the helminth parasites the hosts were cut open along the ventral side and then me muscles were opened. The visceral organs were obseved, opened carefully by a longitudinal incision. The muscles and other internal organs were kept in separate vials, shaked well and transferred again in petridrshes to collect the helminths from different organs. One nematode form was found free in the body cavity and was collected with the help of forceps. The parasites thus collected were fatigued in the physiological saline. The fatigued cestodes and trematodes were fixed in formalin-acetic- alcohol (FAA.) and preserved in glycerine alcohol. Acanthocephalans were first placed in distilled water for full extrusion of pro- boscis and then fixed in F. A. A. Nematodes were directly transferred in glycerine alcohol. Certain forms of cestode, trematode and acanthocephalans were stained in Borax Carmine, dehydra- ted in alcohol grades, cleared in creosote and mounted in Canada balsam. The term incidence of infestation is used to mean the percentage of infestation i.e.total number of frogs infested by different groups of parasites x 100/ total number of frogs examined and the term intensity of infestation to indicate the mean number of different groups of worms in one frog (Total number of worms collected/number of frogs infested) .
