Physico-chemical Changes in Waterlogged Soils: Ii. Change in Iron, Manganese, Calcium. Rotassium and Total Soluble Salts in Solution

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two Scottish solis,Macmerry and Giffnock and two Bangladesh soils. Amgaon and Sonatola were incubated at 30⁰C under waterlogged conditions for 10 weeks. Changes in solution concentrations of jron, manganese,calclun, potassium and total soluble salts were monitored for all four soils. Water logging increased the concentrations of iron. manganese,calcium and potassium in soil solution and total soluble salts for all four soils with peak values generally being reached after four weeks of incubation and a decrease after wards for nutrients and stability for total soluble salts. The maximum increase in total soluble salts for the Macmerry Glffnock, Arncaon and Sonatala soil were found to be 1176. 346, 1036 and 664 µmhos/cm, respectively.

Objectives:

To determine the changes of soil under submerged conditions.

Methodology:

Two Scottish soils, Macrnerrv and two Bangladesh soils, Amgaon and Sonatola were used in this study. The pH and organic matter content of the respective soils ware 6.4, 5.5, 6.8 and 7.6. and organic matter 5.7, 4.0, 1.5 and 1.1 per cent. Duplicate 35g air-dry. finely ground ( <0.2mm) soil samples were placed in 100 ml. polypropylene tubes together with 70 ml of distilled water, sealed, mixed thoroughly and placed in an incubator at 30°c. For the measurement of soil solution concentrations samples were withdrawn from the incubator. shaken and centrifuged to sediment most of the suspended material. After centrifugation about 10 ml of the supernatant liquid was filtered through a 0,22 µ.m. millipore filter to remove any remaining colloidal material and acidified to avoid reoxidation and precipitation of Iron and manganese. The amount of liquid removed was replaced by addition of an equal amount of distilled water and the tube replaced in the incubator. Iron. manganese and calcium were determined by atomic absorption spect- rophotometry and potassium by a flame photometer. Total soluble salts were measured on a conductivity meter using a standard immersion cell with a platinum electrode. Measurements were made after every 4 weeks for 16 weeks.
