Response of Four Exotic Strains of Aman Rice to Urea

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A fertilizer trial on four exotic rice strains and two high yielding varieties, was carried out at the Bangladesh Agricultural University farm to determine their comparative yield potentials and response to added N. Nitrogen had significant effect on tiller formation, plant height, straw and grain yields of rice except the panicle length. The maximum grain yield was obtained with 120 Kg N/ha. The tillers as well as the straw and grain yields decreased from the maximum at the N level of 140 kg/ha. The yield and yield contributing characters of the tested strains were quite comparable to those of the high yielding varieties. The yield response of the exotic strains to added N was found to be higher than those of BR3 and IR20.

Objectives:

To determine the yield potential and the response of the exotic strains to added N in BAU farm soil in relation to BR3 and IR20 rice

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Bangladesh Agriculiural University farm, Mvmenslnqh from August to November,1976, Four strains introduced from IRRI namely IR-442-2-50-2-2, I R-57B-111- 2-2, IR-665-26-2-1. IR-579-23-2-1 and two high yielding varieties BR3 and IR20, were selected for this study. These were identified as BAU-29, BAU- '92, BAU-110 and BAU-128. The experirnent was laid out in a split-plot design with three replication. The unit plots were randomly selected for placement of 6 rates of N and the whole plots with the cultivars of rice. Nitrogen was applied at the rates of 0.60.8O, 100,120 and 140 kg/ha from urea. Half of N and a basal application of triple super phosphate and muriate of potash at the rates of 40 kg P and 30 kg K per hectare, respectively, were applied two days before transplanting the seedlings. The rest half of N were applied as top dressing 30 days after transplanting Thirty days old rice seedlings, at the rate of 2 seedlings/hill, free from diseases and pests, were transplanted on 2 August. 1976. The crop was harvested on 29 November,1976. The height of plants, number of tillers/plant and length of panicles were recorded from 10 randomly selected hills in each plot. Grain and straw yields were recorded on oven dry basis (65°C). Conventional statistical techniques were used in the analysis of data.
