Genetic Parameters and Correlation Coefficient in Safflower (carthamus Tinctorius L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Genetic parameters of different yield contributing characters and correlation coefficients between them were studied in different varieties of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.). The study showed highest genetic coefficient of variation in seed yield per plant followed by primary branch number while it was minimum for days to flower and maturity. Heritability values in broad sense were high for all characters while genetic advance, calculated in percentages of mean was highest for seed- yield per plant. The seed- yield per plant showed a strong positive and significant association with plant height, capitula per plant, days to flower and maturity period. Oil percentage was also found to be positively and strongly correlated with seed yield per plant, plant height and maturity period.

Objectives:

To estimate the study of genetic parameters and correlation for some important yield contributing characters is of value in the improvement of this crop.

Methodology:

Seven varieties of safflower (3 exotic and 4 indigenous) were used in this experiment conducted at Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Dhaka during rabi season of 1981. The seeds were sown on 28 th November. A randomized block design with 3 replications was used. A distance of 50 cm between rows and 15 cm between plants was maintained within each plot of 3 meter long with 5 rows. Ten plants were selected randomly from each plot for the recording of following data: days to flower (50%), plant height (cm), number of primary branches/ plant, number of capitula/ plant, days to maturity (90%) and oil content (%). Oil Content (%) was determined in the laboratory from well dried seeds as per the specifications outlined in A.O.A.C (1960).

Achievement/Findings:

Genotypic coefficient of variation was found to be lowest in days to flower and highest in seed yield/ plant. Primary branches/ plant and plant height showed a great difference between genotypic and phenotypic variations indicating environmental influence on it. The genotypic coefficient of variation alone however is not enough to indicate the amount of heritable variation. In the present investigation, the genetic advance was found to be highest for seed yield/ plant with a high heritability of 87.00%. The other characters, such as plant height, primary branch and capitula/ plant also showed moderate genetic advance with heritability value indicating additive gene action. In correlation studies seed yield was found to be significant and strong positive correlation with plant height, number of capitula/ plant and days to maturity. The oil content (%) showed a positive and significant relationship with seed yield/ plant, plant height, flowering and maturity period. Similarly plant height was reported to be positively correlated with days to flower and maturity. From the correlation studies it is concluded that plant height, number of capitula/ plant days to flower and maturity contributes positively to yield on which selection can be made. Oil content (%) is also an important character which should be considered as a selection criterion for this crop.
