Downy Mildew and Leptosphaerulina Blight on Mustard Two New Diseases Recorded in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

: Downy mildew and Leptosphaerulina blight have been recorded as two new diseases of mustard in Bangladesh. The two diseases were investigated in seven different mustard growing areas of the country during two consecutive cropping seasons of 1983-85. Prevalence, detailed symptoms and cause of the diseases have been described. The pathogen of downy mildew was identified as Paronospora brassicae Caum, while blighted mustard leaves yielded on both blotter arid agar plates Leptosphauulina b ressicee Karan. Pat. hogenicityof L. brassicae was confirmed by inoculation of mustard plants in the glasshouse. Incidence of Downy mildew and leptosphaerulina Blight with respect to percent plants infected varied from 35-86% and 15-78% respectively in the two consecutive cropping seasons in different locations.

Objectives:

The present study deals with the occurrence, symptoms of the two diseases and the identity of their pathogens.

Methodology:

Occurrenece of Downy mildew and Leptosphaerulina blight of mustard under natural conditions were surveyed during the cropping. seasons of 1983 and 1984-85 in seven mustard growing areas in district of the country . Eight to ten plots in each area were surveyed. In each area number of infected plants and number of infected leaves per plant were counted in five unit plots (2m x 2m) per plot. Symptoms of the diseases were recorded in situ and diseased specimens were collected from different areas for further studies in the laboratory. The pathogen of the Downy mildew was identified by observing microscopic slides prepared from diseased leaves. In case of l.eptosphaerulina blight, the pathogen was isolated on blotter, PDA and PDA supplemented with 1 % mustard leaf extract. Pathogenicity test of Leptosphaerul- in) blight causal organism was conducted in the glasshouse by inoculating mustard plant, of different age (1 to 10 weeks) with ascospore S .ispension Pathogenicity of Downy mildew causal organism was not performed as it was an obligate parasite.
