Infrared Study on Crosslinked Dyed Jute Fabric

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Carpet Backing Cloth made of Corchorus Olitorius fiber was frist desized and bleached with hydrogen per-oxide. Simultaneous dyeing and finishing method was carried out using reactive dyes with some cross linking agents like fixapret CPN, Fixapret ECOs of BASF and Indosol E-50 Powder along with MgCl₂ 6 H₂O as catalyst and softening agent employing dry crosslinking method. The evidence of the crosslinking was detected by IR studies. Co-valent bond was formed between OH groups of fixing agent and neucleophilic groups of dye i.e. NH₂ and OH groups of jute cellulose by cross linking technique.

Objectives:

To prepare the Carpet Backing Cloth using crosslinking agent
To analyze the existence of the crosslinking agent using IR radiation.

Methodology:

Carpet Backing Cloth first was de-sized, scoured and bleached with hydrogen peroxide. simultaneous dyeing and finishing methods were carried out using various reactive dyes with some crosslinking agents like fixapret CPN, Fixapret ECOs of BASF and Indosol E-50 Powder along with MgCl₂ 6 H₂O as catalyst and softening agent employing dry crosslinking method. impregnated the fabrics by padding machine giving liquor pickup 100%, dried at 80-100^OC to retain the moisture 6-8% wrapped in a plastic film, batched for 20-24h and then washed. The IR absorption of bleached CBC and crosslinked dyed CBC were obtained on a Perkia Elmer 983G by using KBr pellet 10 at standard conditions.

Achievement/Findings:

The data reveals that the peaks at 1725 cm^-1 and 1670 cm^-1 are visible in crosslinked dyed fabrics when treated with fixapret CPN and Indosol E-50 powder. Theses peaks indicated the presence of carbonyl groups in the reaction product. It is essential to interpret at this stage how the carbonyl group came inthe products. There are two possibilities for occurring the carbonyl group in fixapret CPN and Indosol E-50 powder treated fabrics may arise due to croisslinking between reactive hydroxyl group of jute cellulose and the reactive group of methylol compound of cross linking agent and at the same time with the dye containing neucleophilic groups. Secondly the peak will also occur if self crosslinking occur due to condensation between the hydroxyl groups of DMDHEU molecule themselves. The peak range from 1345-1385 and 2500-3000 indicates the presence of NO₂ and NH compounds present in the neucleophilic of dyes 13. Further, these two reactions may lead ti information of ether linkage, which absorb in the range of 1080- 1300 cm^-1.
